2005 Education & Training Excellence Award

The AFLPA is proud to announce the finalists in the 2005 Education & Training Excellence Award.  Proudly sponsored by Computer Power, this is the fourth year the AFLPA has recognised players for achieving excellence in football, education and training.  The awards winner receives their choice of a $10,000 Computer Power course bursary or $3,000 in cash.    

The nominees include;

Chris Heffernan - Melbourne                                                                               

Chris completed his Bachelor of Business degree at RMIT (1997-2000). In 2001 - 2002, he worked part time with a stockbroking firm. Chris has also completed a Graduate Diploma of Applied Finance and Investment at RMIT (2004-2005).   In 2005, Chris was accepted onto the AFLPA/AFL Sportsready Next Goal Program, working with Austock, in the field of corporate finance.  Chris has played 143 games of AFL football with Essendon & Melbourne, managing to adapt to his busy training and study schedule.

Simon Beaumont - Hawthorn                                                                                 

Simon recently completed a Masters Degree of Business Administration. He has maintained a high standard of Football throughout his career as well as succeeding with his study.  Simon has achieved a good life balance between football and study and has recently birth of his first child has added another dimension to his life.

Brenton Sanderson - Geelong                                                                              

In 1992 Brenton completed a fitness/leisure course, allowing him to become a gym instructor.  Throughout 1997-2004, Brenton completed a Bachelor of Commerce Degree at Deakin University. In 2004 Brenton started his Pilots Licence and completed his 60 hours of flying in late 2004.  Brenton has shown a huge appetite to be the best footballer and ambassador he can be for the Geelong Football Club.  He has set a great example with his organised lifestyle and career planning over the years. 

James Clement - Collingwood                                                                              

James completed a Bachelor of Science (Aquaculture) degree in 1994-1997 and in 97-98 completed a Graduate Diploma in Business.  During 1998-2000, James was employed by commercial fishing company Focus Fisheries.  In 2001-2004, James completed a Masters of Business Administration and in 2004-2005, completed a Graduate Certificate of Financial Planning.  In 2004 James was accepted onto the Next Goal Program and undertook a placement with Cameron Walshe Financial Planners.  In 2005 James completed a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning and is now employed with Thorney Investments as an Accredited Derivative Advisor.  James is a great role model to the Collingwood playing group and is a strong advocate of developing yourself for life away from football.  James is also the AFLPA Collingwood delegate.

Alistair Nicholson - Melbourne       

In 2004 Alistair completed a Bachelor of Commerce degree at the University of Melbourne, over 6 years of part time study.  In 2005 Alistair was accepted onto the Next Goal Program and now works part-time as a business consultant with Crowe/Lovett.  Alistair has played 108 games with Melbourne and is on the AFLPA Executive Committee.  Alistair has successfully combined study, work, football, and a role on the AFLPA Executive with great enthusiasm and diligence.

The winner of this prestigious award will be announced Grand Final Eve, at the AFL Players' Association's Most Valuable Player function.
