Single-player mode propels you through 26 dark and twisting levels in search of nightmarish demons crossing over to our world via top secret "Slipgates." Starting with an ax and a single-barrel shotgun, you'll upgrade to grenade and rocket launchers, nail guns and, finally, the most powerful weapon of all: the energy-emitting Thunderbolt. You can build up your resistance by finding armor, Biosuits and Megahealth boxes. Extremely rare power-ups quadruple your attack strength, make you invincible or render you virtually invisible. Quake 64 also features four difficulty levels and customizable Controller settings. Midway has retained most of the layouts from the PC version. Quake 64 conveys a great sense of 3-D environments, with monsters, passageways and items to be found both above and below. Fortunately, quick and responsive play control makes it easy to master swimming, jumping on the run and other survival skills. The two-player option gives players a taste of PC network death matches. Playing Quake is like living a horror movie. The game simply gushes atmosphere from every slime-coated, ambient lighted, gothic architectural artery.

Despite its flaws, Nintendo 64 owners looking for the Quake experience can't go wrong with this game -- if for single-player mode alone. However, seasoned Quakers looking for the ultimate multiplayer game may want to rent before they buy.

I knew there was no way Quake 64 could pull off a control scheme as fluid as my PC setup. But it comes close, and I have to give it credit for that.

But be forewarned. If you are expecting to get the same experience that you've been hearing about from rabid PC gamers, you aren't going to get it. Quake for the PC was an okay game made great by the superb online options and an open architecture.

If you've never played Quake on any machine before, this is one of the best versions available this side of the original PC game.

Though the enemies aren't programmed well enough to follow you around many corners and elevators like they would in Turok or Bond, the surprises and just sheer craziness of attacking enemies makes Quake64 a game that freaks you out.
