This contest is over as of August 31, 2007 11:59PM PST. View the winners!
At CHOW, vodka cocktails and seasonal, organic ingredients are held in high esteem. We’d like to see what you can do with them, too. In partnership with our friends at Square One Organic Vodka and Om Organics, we’ve got a challenge for you: show us your mad cocktail-making skills. Put your muddler to work against the bounty of your local farmer’s market. Whether you’re an amateur or a professional mixologist, submit your best cocktail recipes using organic vodka and seasonal ingredients and you could win a trip to San Francisco to compete at the Square Off finals at the vibrant Ferry Building Farmers Market.
Your submission must be an original recipe for a pitcher cocktail using Square One Organic Vodka and at least 75 percent organic ingredients by volume. At the Square Off finals, the competition heats up. Two winners—an amateur and a professional—will face two challenges: develop one cocktail using ingredients culled from the Farmers Market at the Ferry Building that day and another based on a mystery seasonal, organic ingredient. The judges’ verdicts on all three drinks will determine the Square Off winner.
Submit your recipe, and you will be entered to win a trip to the Square Off finals in San Francisco, where you’ll be mixing drinks in the heat of competition. Winner of the finals will take home a ProDesign total bar in a box set!
Buy your tickets to the on-site Square Off finals at the San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market on Tuesday, September 25, at 5:30 p.m. Ticket sales benefit Om Organics and CUESA, organizations promoting sustainable agriculture in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The two (2) winners from Stage One will compete against each other in a spontaneous creation of two (2) cocktails in front of a live audience and Judging Panel during the Stage Two Square Off Finals in San Francisco on September 25, 2007. Winners from Stage One will be required to be on hand at the Square Off Finals. The Judging Panel’s decisions are final and binding on all matters relating to the Contest.
Stage One–Entry Guidelines
Cocktail Category: Entries may be of any cocktail category, including but not limited to pre-dinner, after-dinner and long drinks and MUST be the Entrant’s original creation. Frozen or hot cocktail recipes will not be accepted.
Volume: The volume of a cocktail must be a minimum of three (3) ounces and shall not exceed seven (7) ounces, excluding ice.
Recipe details: All recipes shall be expressed in ounces, divided in, respectively, whole numbers, (1, 3, 5, etc.) and/or half-numbers, (½, 1½, 2 ½, etc.) and as smallest quantities, dashes and/or drops. All cocktails may be either hand stirred, hand shaken, or blended in an electric mixer. All recipes should be easily duplicated in batches (i.e., “pitcher ready”), as the winning recipes will be made and served to guests at the Square Off Finals.
Recipe Ingredients: Each recipe shall contain at least two (2) alcoholic ingredients, one of which must be Square One Organic Vodka. The maximum number of alcoholic and non-alcoholic ingredients in the recipes shall be limited to six (6) including dashes and drops. Anything that alters the flavor of the drink, including flavored rims, muddled fruit or any other flavoring agent that comes in contact with the drink will be counted as an ingredient. Each Entry must contain at least one and a half ounces of Square One Organic Vodka. Entrant may choose the remaining ingredients, but at least 75% of the ingredients by volume must be Certified Organic by the USDA and/or another accredited certification body. Entrants may use basic (fresh) fruit juices, fresh egg-white, pre-packaged syrups, simple syrups and bitters. Entrants may NOT use heated, home-made or self-made ingredients, or blend ingredients to count as one (1) ingredient.
Judging criteria: Stage One will consist of two (2) rounds. In Round One, judging by the Judging Panel will be based strictly on the potential of the written recipes that are submitted–they will not be created. Each Entry will be judged equally on the following characteristics:
The three (3) competitors in each category with the highest scores in Round One will then enter into Round Two. The three (3) winners of Round One in each category will receive Honorable Mentions for the Contest.
Round Two will be conducted by the Judging Panel with the six (6) winning Round One drinks being made by Square One Brand Ambassador and Mixologist, H. Joseph Ehrmann according to the recipes submitted as part of the Entry. Each Entry will be judged equally on the following characteristics:
The winning Entry in each category after Round Two will be declared “Best Amateur Recipe” and “Best Mixologist Recipe,” respectively, for the Contest. The winning contestants will be invited to compete against each other in Stage Two at the Square Off Finals in San Francisco. Scores from Stage One will carry over to Stage Two.
Stage Two–Square Off Finals
Format: Stage Two, the Square Off Finals, shall consist of two (2) rounds before a live audience and the Judging Panel.
In Round One, the two finalists must spontaneously create one (1) cocktail utilizing one (1) secret ingredient chosen from the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market by the Judging Panel. The day before Square Off Finals, the finalists will be told of five (5) potential secret ingredients for Round One. The final secret ingredient will be revealed to them on stage at the commencement of Round One.
In Round Two, the two finalists must spontaneously create one (1) cocktail utilizing the competitor’s choice of ingredients from the Farmers Market. Prior to the commencement of Stage Two, the finalists will be given a tour of the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market with instructions on how they are to obtain their ingredients from the vendors.
Each finalist shall be limited to ten (10) minutes for each round to make and garnish their cocktail. Ten (10) additional minutes will be provided after each round to complete four (4) additional drinks for the Judging Panel and the display table. Finalists shall mix at the same time and shall present themselves in respectable attire.
Logistics: Sponsor shall provide each finalist a selection of cocktail ingredients, modifiers and tools and a workable bar set up on stage.
Volume: The volume of any cocktail must be a minimum of three (3) ounces and shall not exceed seven (7) ounces, excluding ice.
Cocktail requirements: Each cocktail shall contain at least two (2) alcoholic ingredients, one of which must be Square One Organic Vodka. Finalists shall use only those ingredients supplied by Sponsor in their cocktails, other than garnishes. Standard long straws, short straws, picks, and stirrers may be used, all of which will be furnished by Sponsor.
Garnishes: Garnishes for a total of ten (10) drinks must be prepared by the finalists prior to going on stage for the Square Off Finals. Garnishes must be edible and will be included in the ingredient count if they alter the flavor of the drink. No artificial arrangements or food-dyes shall be allowed. Garnish decorations shall not be arranged so as to display any identifiable signs or the contestant’s identity. Rimmers are considered an ingredient, not a garnish. Any questionable garnishes must be approved by Sponsor.
Judging criteria: Each cocktail for each round will be judged equally on the following characteristics:
The finalists with the highest aggregate combined score after Stage One and Stage Two shall be declared the Square Off Winner!
