Panasonic DMC-FX100

First there was the 12-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W200. Then came the Casio Exilim EX-Z1200 and the Kodak EasyShare Z1275, which also have 12 megapixels. Not to be outdone, Panasonic has released the 12.2-megapixel DMC-FX100, which boasts a 28mm wide-angle lens, 3.6x optical zoom, 20 scene modes, and shooting bursts up to 8 frames per second. It can also detect movement and automatically raise the ISO and shutter speed so you won't get motion blur. More Panasonic cameras.

Kodak EasyShare M753

You know that store Design Within Reach? We love their furniture, but come on, those prices are hardly within most people's reach. We believe Kodak, however, when they describe their new EasyShare M753 camera as "style within reach." The compact 7-megapixel camera offers 3x optical zoom, digital image stabilization, 17 scene modes, and all kinds of on-camera editing options, all for less than $150. It will be available in 6 colors: Sterling, black onyx, denim (shown here), pink bliss, plum, and copper. More 7-megapixel cameras.

Casio EX-Z1200 Camera

Casio claims its 12-megapixel EX-Z1200 camera has the highest resolution in any compact digital camera. Which means it either came out moments before the Kodak EasyShare Z1275, which also has 12 megapixels, or the term "compact" is loosely defined. Anyway, the Casio has standard 3x optical zoom, a 2.8" LCD display, 37 Best Shot shooting modes, and face detection and motion analysis technologies, which come in handy when taking pictures of moving subjects. We wonder if that's why the Casio is so much more expensive than the Kodak.

Kodak EasyShare Z1275 Camera

Remember when people got all excited about cameras with 7 or 8 megapixels? That ain't nothin'. The new Kodak EasyShare Z1275 has a 12-megapixel sensor, which is probably more resolution than you really need, unless you plan on making poster-sized prints of your pets kids. Additional features include 5x optical zoom, a 35-175mm wide-angle lens, digital image stabilization, multiple scene modes, and lots of automatic and manual controls. Not bad for $235. More Kodak cameras.

Canon PowerShot S5 IS

The latest addition to Canon's line of high-end cameras is the Canon PowerShot S5 IS, an upgraded version of last year's PowerShot S3 IS. The 8-megapixel S5 IS has image stabilization, face detection, and red eye correction capabilities, as well as 12x optical zoom and a 2.5-inch vari-angle LCD for easy shooting at any angle. If you want even more zoom, plus a wider-angle lens, check out the slightly-more-affordable Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-H9.
