It is 2047 and the stakes could not be higher. Tiberium—a self-replicating alien substance that has infected the Earth—is spreading like a radioactive ice age. The GDI, a high-tech alliance of the world’s most advanced nations, is fighting to contain Tiberium, but Kane, the megalomaniacal leader of The Brotherhood of NOD has other plans for Earth. Kane’s secret society turned superpower is bent on using Tiberium to take control and transform humanity into his twisted vision of the future. All-out war rages over Tiberium and the fate of the planet rests in the balance. Experience a revolution in RTS gaming with a single player campaign that rewards you for your gameplay style. Add layers of strategy to your gaming experience by building mobile bases, wielding the power of terrifying Ion Storms on the battlefield, or customizing your armies by combining units. Battle it out online with native voice-over IP, integrated clan support, and new spectator modes that let you play RTS games like a sport. [Electronic Arts]

The big difference is the technical move forward. Action is fluid, special effects are pretty, and the cutscenes are funny and entertaining. Even the in-game physics, like building explosions and collapses, are comparable to first person shooters.

We'll happily put our hands up and admit to our slight over-reliance on the phrase “if you like Command & Conquer, you’ll like this” when reviewing the more arcadey RTS games over the years, but this time it’s a necessity. Fans of the C&C; series will quite simply find this to be nothing less than absolutely essential.

Worth Playing
As good as the single-player campaigns are, the multiplayer capabilities are where the game really shines. Going head-to-head against a human opponent doesn't involve a storyline, but victory is always more satisfying against a real person than against a computer opponent programmed to perform at "normal" difficulty levels.

The retro touches like the return of cheesy cut-scenes, the universe itself and the focus on Tiberium in its decidedly science fiction storyline have had just the right amount of effort applied to make this an incredibly refined experience.

Some minor balancing issues and a lack of "strategic depth" aside, Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars is a giddy blast from the past, spiffed up with a sweet new look, a beefed up multiplayer suite, and the return of some familiar faces reprising their roles from the dawn of RTS gaming.

It doesn’t raise the bar regarding the RTS genre’s standards and it doesn’t really come close to the existing ones, even though it does feature certain innovations over the previous titles of the series. Nevertheless, it’s a game with a solid universe for the background story, a large fan base, more than decent single-player campaign and, in regards to the graphics and sounds, it most certainly can go toe to toe with any RTS released in these last two years.

Like a once-great champ who's come out of retirement for one last crack at the title, C&C3;: Tiberium Wars doesn't quite have enough tricks in its repertoire to defeat its younger, fresher opponents. But while it may be more contender than king these days, it still packs one hell of a punch. [May 2007, p.62]

An enjoyable strategy game as long as you are OK with the fact that its gameplay is distinctly old school at heart. If you're looking for innovative play and strategic depth look elsewhere, but otherwise it’s a pulse-pounding, mouse finger-twitching good time.

An old game in new clothing, which, fortunately, is a not a bad thing. Sure, some of the sound effects are recycled from the earliest C&C; titles – send out infantry to be slaughtered and tell me I’m wrong – and it does not bring anything significantly new to the genre but is sure is fun.

A few minor irritations, most notably queuing up production in multiple buildings, don’t do much to mar the overall experience. C&C; 3 is a shining example of how fun a five-year-old design can still be if it receives enough polish and tuning.

After years in the wilderness, RTS is pretty cool again right now, and something as cheerfully straightforward as this is just what's needed to stop the big braininess of "Company of Heroes" and "Supreme Commander" leading to another plunge into an inaccessibility that turns more casual players off the whole genre.

There are many more original real-time strategies out there, but few that scream "pick up and play me" as loudly as Tiberium Wars. Its back to the basics approach to the genre won’t win any prizes for innovation, but it should prove to be a fan favorite anyway.

From a gameplay standpoint I would have been happier had they gone with a more open mission structure and something that feels a little less crushed by the weight of all the filmmaking going on. Still and all it’s well-polished, and undeniably continues the C&C; legacy.

Unlike "Supreme Commander," it isn’t a cerebral game - it's all about slaughtering your enemies by using gross, macro-level tactics. And, doing it all as fast as possible - if ever there was an arcade RTS, Command and Conquer is it. The main problem is that it doesn’t do anything new.

Command and Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars isn't a bad game, but it hardly feels like a full new game either. It's more like an enhanced expansion pack, with more units, better (but not amazing) graphics and a new storyline.

The game is as homogenous and unimaginative as a tabloid cover, and is as far past its prime as Billy Dee Williams. It’s still a decent RTS, but it wins with quantity, not quality, just like Colt 45.

Carl K. gave it a7:
The re-release of the original IMO and at this time when game companies are struggling with the balance of quaility and functions versus release and profit is why this still scores so high. Its really sad to see games that have come out and with this quility beating so many new games. I thisnk if more put the investment and look as they have with this one. This game would have been ignored. Old theme just redone. Its still fun but gets old fast....build allot of med tanks and RUSH RUSH...they still cant fix that with something like 5 min wait time or ubder base defenses that would eleminate the rushers....but that mot why for my vote. Its just the same sage repackaged...last about a week of fun then its repeat, repeat, to the point its too boring. There so much more that could be done with this on a multiplayer side then the limited way its setup.

Arne K. gave it a3:
Two point for good storyline. one point for good actors. another point for ... oh ... erm ... that's it. could someone tell ea to stop? pls? i mean, it sure looks nice when i'm not ingame and i sure love the story about the tiberium but ... ea messed it all up. and i guess the moneyflow stopped during the scrin campaign.

Dario D. gave it a9:
A surprisingly darn good (and solid) RTS, which takes Tiberian Sun to the next level.

Cameron T-P. gave it a7:
Overall, Command And Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars is a good game but fails to add anything revolutionary to the RTS Genre. With so so many online problems I've had with it, I just can't justify giving it a higher rating than 7, even though the Campaign on the whole is brilliant and my only complaint is that the Scrin campaign left much to be desired.

Dave K. gave it an8:
An excellent extension of the C&C; series, it suffers from slight balance issues, but still a total blast. It's reminiscent of the classic games, but with a shiny engine and, woohoo, they brought back good ole human videos. Multiplayer is a blast, but not too much of a metagame that I saw, although I'm much more into single player. Plenty of room for mods makes this worth buying for now and later.

Andy M. gave it a3:
Pretty Average. No skills needed. I've played all C&C;,an apart from good graphics and video cut scenes, there is no gameplay advance over the last C&C; some 3 yrs ago!! Disappointing to a past fan, but with EA marketing push it'll sell.

Tyler A. gave it a1:
Fun single player, but that's likely all you'll get to play if you buy this. With all the time they've spent working on balance, merch, and hype, the net code of this game sucks, horribly. A large number of people cannot even play online (myself included) due to shoddy network code. Don't pay retail price for a game that still seems to be in beta.
