The levels are not only more interactive, but they're also enormous - much larger than those from "THPS3." [Nov 2002, p.50]

Official U.S. Playstation Magazine
Makes a mockery of "Hawk 3" - you'll see. Funny, smart, richly entertaining and superbly crafted, Hawk 4 is more in the same class as "Grand Theft Auto III." [Dec 2002, p.178]

Cheat Code Central
All I can say is this year's installment puts all others to shame.

The first thing gamers will notice is that the levels are huge, the goals are plentiful, and basically its everything you know and love about Tony Hawk, except bigger.

Where else can you skate to Iron Maiden, AC/DC, De La Soul, Public Enemy and the Sex Pistols? "Evolution Skateboarding"? Yeah, right! [Dec 2002, p.76]

The same great Tony goodness is back with better graphics, more and cooler tricks (read: lazy a$$ manual), better sound, and the whole damn game has been completely revamped. The replay value goes through the roof.

The sound effects are even more disturbing than previous games with crunching bone sounds that will leave most people cringing the first few times.

Short of smacking your knees with a sledgehammer and scraping your face with a cheesegrater, the genre couldn’t really feel much more realistic (and no, none of us plan to stand on one of those daft ‘skateboard PS2 peripherals’ either).

The game's goals are so diverse, you can't help but come back for more, if only to see what outrageous challenges await you next. [Dec 2002, p.226]

Easily the best Tony Hawk game yet, and online multiplayer makes it the best complete package in the genre.

I would definitely recommend this one to anyone who has enjoyed a previous THPS game, as it is easily the biggest and best one yet. There are a ton of goals to complete, insanely hard challenges that'll keep you coming back, and the best online play yet.

With timeless beats like De La Soul's "Oodles of O's" plus pre-Mortal Kombat combos (which don't require memorizing 56 moves), you'll forget you actually bought this game for your kid. [25 Oct 2002, p.83]

LividFiction gave it a10:
Whenever I think of skateboarding games, my mind immediately jumps to THPS4—and for good reason. THPS4 finishes what THPS started three years prior. It boasts a fully free-roaming career mode in which you find goals to complete rather than rush to complete a checklist within a two-minute time limit. With visuals rivaled only by its predecessor, outstanding levels, and a rock-solid set of features, THPS4 is the pinnacle of the series. It is skateboarding realized in the virtual world.

David C. gave it a7:
I have to say I was reluctant to buy the game due to it being the same format as TH1, 2 and 3. Although it is not the best TH game on the shelves i have to say it impressed me!

Cory K. gave it a10:
This game is the best TH game ever. There is so much to do and the addition of talking to people to get objectives is cool. The gameplay has kept evolving and this is the end product of 4 years of improvement.

Some idiot gave it a0:
Are you even joking?? i'm not sure where to start on why this doesn't deserve a 95% average, so i won't bother. i will say that it is basically the same game that came out on the PS1 about 8 years ago, with a bit more novelty crap added on, it aint bad but its all a bit pointless really.

Andy S. gave it a6:
I'm not to fond of skateboarding games, I'd rather get out there and do it my self. When I do play though this would be a good choice. It's online and has not too many flaws, but I'd rather lpay somthing with a background story about more than a guy's carrer. (No affence Tony!) Try simpsons skatboarding or something really playable.

Andrew M. gave it a 10:
The best skating game EVER to be made on Earth.

David S. gave it a 10:
Its Rocks!!! I love this game...!
