COMMENTARY:What is Global Warming, and what can citizens do about it?EDITOR'S NOTE: As a convenience to our readers the following was excerpted from the CLIMATECRISIS.NET website, which is an Internet reference for Al Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" Carbon dioxide and other gases warm the surface of the planet naturally by trapping solar heat in the atmosphere. This is a good thing because it keeps our planet habitable. However, by burning fossil fuels such as coal, gas and oil and clearing forests we have dramatically increased the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth’s atmosphere and temperatures are rising. The vast majority of scientists agree that global warming is real, it’s already happening and that it is the result of our activities and not a natural occurrence. The evidence is overwhelming and undeniable. We’re already seeing changes. Glaciers are melting, plants and animals are being forced from their habitat, and the number of severe storms and droughts is increasing.
REDUCE YOUR IMPACT AT HOMEMost emissions from homes are from the fossil fuels burned to generate electricity and heat. By using energy more efficiently at home, you can reduce your emissions and lower your energy bills by more than 30%.In addition, since agriculture is responsible for about a fifth of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, you can reduce your emissions simply by watching what you eat. Here’s how: Replace high-use regular incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (cfl) REDUCE YOUR IMPACT WHILE ON THE MOVEAlmost one third of the carbon dioxide produced in the United States comes from our cars, trucks and airplanes. Here are some simple, practical things you can do to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide you produce while on the move.Reduce the number of miles you drive by walking, biking, carpooling or taking mass transit wherever possible The above information is excerpted from the CLIMATECRISIS.NET website.
