Epilogue: The death of Farfur
2 Jul 2007
On Friday, June 29, Hamas Television broadcast the final episode of the program starring Farfur, the Mickey Mouse look-alike who indoctrinated Palestinian children to violence, hatred and murder. In this episode, Farfur is beaten to death by an Israeli, becoming a "shahid", or martyr for Allah, further nurturing the cult of martyrdom which has inspired Palestinian children to take an increasingly active role in the violence.

"I'll begin with a few basic observations about the situation in the region, and mainly about the complex relations between Israel and the Palestinians which have obviously changed in recent days. These basic observations are necessary, among other things, for us to understand where we're heading in the context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict... If we wish to discuss extremism that is reflected in a country, the best example, the one that threatens world peace, is Iran."

"The new government in the Palestinian Authority, which recognizes Israel’s right to exist and a solution of two states for two peoples, which is ready to implement the agreements signed, one which eschews terror and violence as a means and a goal, and a government which has no members of terrorist organizations, is a government which we recognize. We will work together to implement the Roadmap and advance the goals set out therein."

"For too long, the Middle East has been governed by zero-sum logic. One side's loss was seen as the other's gain. This thinking has brought much suffering to our region." - Article published in Arabic in "Asharq Alawsat"

25 Jun 2007
June 25, 2007 marks one year since the unprovoked abduction of Gilad Shalit on the Israeli side of the border with Gaza, and July 11 - of Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser on the Israeli side of the Lebanese border.
FM Livni: "Hamas is making cynical use of the suffering of Gilad Shalit, the pain of his family and of the people of Israel, in order to dictate its own brutal agenda in the region, in order to undermine a political process which is taking place right now to create a better future for the region. Hamas is responsible for the life and health of Gilad Shalit, and we, the Israeli government, will take all steps to bring him back home."

Behind the Headlines: Recent events in Gaza and the Mideast peace process
24 Jun 2007
Israel’s goal of being a democratic Jewish state, living in harmony with its neighbors, led it to embrace the vision of two states for two peoples as resolved by the United Nations in 1947. It has taken nearly 60 years, and far too many wars, for this vision to be recognized by Israel’s immediate neighbors, the Palestinians. Today’s events in Gaza suggest the time has never been more appropriate to finally realize this vision.

FM Livni: "The clear distinction between moderates and extremists, between Hamas and Fatah, has practical implications for the way the Israeli government relates to Abu Mazen as well as our working relations with the new Palestinian government, including what we are willing to do to strengthen the moderates who wish to live in peace, who want to advance the two-state process and who are prepared to reject terrorism. Fatah is the group that currently represents these principles."
