Byrd sent back to hospital
Posted: 03/05/08 05:32 PM [ET]

Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.) was readmitted to a Washington-area hospital Wednesday afternoon for tests, after he developed allergic reactions to antibiotics that he has been taking for a urinary tract infection.

The hospitalization comes less than a week after a four-day hospital stay for back pains.

The 90-year-old Byrd — the longest-serving senator in U.S. history — is suffering from reactions to his antibiotics and needs tests and observation to determine a different course of medication, said a statement from his office.

“His stay is expected to be brief,” the statement said.

Byrd was hospitalized last week after a fall at his Virginia home. X-rays showed no broken bones, and the senator underwent physical therapy, a spokesman said.

Byrd’s hospitalization comes as the Senate Budget Committee is scheduled to mark up its fiscal 2009 budget resolution Thursday. A committee member, Byrd has been allowed to vote by proxy because of his illness.
