WESTON Awarded $85 Million Contract to Expand Temporary Pumping Capacity at 17th Street and London Avenue Canals in New Orleans, LA
NEW ORLEANS, LA — February 7,
2007 – Weston Solutions, Inc. (WESTON®)
announced today that it has been awarded an estimated $85
million design-build contract by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers
Hurricane Protection Office (HPO). The cost-reimbursable contract
will increase the existing temporary pumping capacity at the 17th
Street and London Avenue Canals in New Orleans, Louisiana. The pumps
will move water from the outfall canals into Lake Pontchartrain
in the event of a major storm surge that requires closure of the
canal flood gates. The HPO award will be managed by the Corps but
was contracted through the Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence
(AFCEE).
Patrick G. McCann, WESTON’s Chairman, CEO and President
said, “This is a critically important project for the people of
New Orleans. We are best known for understanding the needs of the
communities we work in and for delivering teams and technologies
to solve our clients’ most difficult challenges. We have worked
successfully with AFCEE and the Corps for over 35 years. I am confident
that this local team has the proven technical capability, client
experience and local resources to deliver the necessary increase
in New Orleans pumping capacity.”
As the General Contractor for the design-build
project, WESTON has built an exceptional team of subcontractors from
the local contracting community of large and small business entities—critical for timely execution and efficiency. In order to successfully
perform this fast-track project, they have partnered with two Louisiana-based
construction contractors, M.R. Pittman Group, LLC and Dynamic Industries, Inc.
LLC, who will perform construction services on the London Avenue and 17th Street
Canals. In addition, the design team will include BBG&S; Engineering Consultants,
a small business that will be partnered with Gresham Smith and Partners, who
have worked with WESTON in the past delivering design-build infrastructure services
to the Army.
Matthew Beatty, WESTON Project Manager, commented, “The selection of WESTON and
its partners was a best value decision, fully aligning this team around one clear
established goal: providing the required pumping capacity to meet the needs of
the City of New Orleans.”
The project, known as the Expansion of Temporary
Pump Stations at 17th Street and London Avenue Canals, is a design-build
effort to increase overall capacity of those stations to pump internal
storm drainage around the canal flood gates during major storms when
the flood gates to Lake Pontchartrain are closed. The overall increase
in capacity will provide for 7,600 cubic feet per second (cfs) on the
17th Street Canal and 5,000 cfs on the London Avenue Canal.
