Renowned writers Wolfgang Walk, Mark L. Barrett and Bob Bates tell the tale of Thomas "Hawk" Blythe and his powerful adversary, Edward Teach, better known as the dreaded Blackbeard. It is as much a pirate tale as ever there was, and this is one to make the blood boil with love and honor, conspiracy and theft, violence and murder. Features include: Blackbeard! The most feared and notorious pirate to sail the seas; Pirate story of voodoo, treasure, treachery and love; Battles at sea and on land, close combat, sneaking and climbing; 8 ship types, with diverse configurations and ammunition; Traditional collection of close combat weapons with some less conventional bonus weapons; Wide range of sword fight maneuvers, combo attacks and special moves. This is a game where the sum of the parts make a fairly satisfying whole.

Tortuga has only one shining stone in the chest: sea battles. Unfortunately the rest of the game pulls it down.

PC Gamer
It's just that not enough of the missions stand out, and the majority feel like sleepwalks through pirate lore that would bore a pre-teen. [June 2007, p.60]

Worth Playing
It's really difficult to recommend this game to anyone since Sid Meier's Pirates! has everything that Tortuga does, and even manages to do it better.

Gaming Nexus
The game is slow to entrust you with special moves (your only sign of character progression), and plot holes in an otherwise adventurous storyline keep the film reel in shoddy shape.

Next Level Gaming
There are just a few things wrong with this game, like repetitive land battles, horrible AI and no save options that lead me to the conclusions that no one should get this game. There are plenty of great pirate games out there, if you want a good one look elsewhere.

Boomtown
It's generic Pirate fare with caricature characters and plots derived from any Pirate film you care to mention.

My advice is to sail these rough waters with caution, because if you’re not careful you could very well end up depressed and out thirty doubloons.

Steer a wide berth around Tortuga—Two Treasures if you’re a seasoned gamer who demands either the latest technology or a serious—and lasting—challenge.

Ship-to-ship combat is somewhat exciting due to some fresh options to set and trim sails, but everything else is tedious, poorly designed, or both.

PC Gameworld
Despite its reliance on clichés the game starts off well, with a great atmosphere and some sublime visuals (water effects and sunsets are particularly nice) but once you delve a little deeper the limitations of the hugely linear missions and combat really drag you down and suck most of the enjoyment out of the game.

Jolt Online Gaming UK
A poor man’s version of Sid Meier’s Pirates, and seeing as the other game is probably on a budget label by now, or at least in a bargain bin somewhere, then it’s clear that this won’t even appeal to those who want some story with their pirating.

If only it had set its sights on capturing the same sense of fun. [May 2007, p.80]

More problematic is the game's land-based combat. While I understand the difficulty in creating a decent sword-fighting system, the, Tortuga is button-mashing at its worst -- and not even multiple buttons!

The clichéd storyline is accompanied by plenty of hammily acted cut-scenes, and the whole package is ultimately pretty forgettable. There's some nautical mileage in the sea battles, but that's not nearly enough.

G4 TV
Since the game’s storyline and restricted gameplay keeps you from ever just branching off and doing your own thing, what you’re left with here is basically a sub-par pirate-themed adventure game that offers some fun sea-based combat and some boring sword-to-sword stuff.

Strategy Informer
It’s a broken game, unfinished, derivative and sloppily produced, filled with uninteresting environments and levels. A pirate’s life is supposedly full of action and adventure, but you’ll find none of it here.

Guybrush T. gave it a4:
I returned this game the day after I bought it stating that it was damaged. It wasn't damaged. It was however a mundane, non-linear, badly coded attempt to cash in on Johnny Depp's latest movies. Combat at sea is unpredictable and luck based as your cannons range varies from being able to fire upto half a mile away and not firing at all when you are practically on top of an enemy ship. Combat on land is dependant on hammering your left mouse button whilst trying to shepherd the 6+ enemies that attack you at once into a corner before they mob you. There has been a mass of pirate-based games of recent catalysed by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies with this and the official PotC games being the worst and Sid Meier's Pirates and Age of Pirates: Caribbean Tales being the cream of the crop. And I should know, I'm a mighty pirate! *strokes beard*
