SA wheelchair basketball team forge ahead
The South African wheelchair basketball team are on the brink of qualifying for the Paralympic Games in Beijing after advancing to the final of the qualifier on Saturday. Team Sasol beat Egypt 71-53 in their semifinal at the Omnisports Stadium in Rabat and will now clash with Morocco for the one Africa spot at the Paralympics.
New fishing plan aims to save sea life
A plan to reduce the effects of commercial fishing fleets within Southern Africa's so-called Benguela-current large marine ecosystem was released in Cape Town on Wednesday. Experts have hailed it as a clear and practical way of implementing an "ecosystem approach to fisheries" policy in the region.
Sasol project makes eco-history
Sasol has become the first company globally to register a nitrous oxide (N2O) abatement project that converts greenhouse gas N2O into harmless nitrogen and oxygen gases, the company announced on Monday. "This project reflects our continuous drive to decrease the impact of our operations on the environment," it said in a statement.
SA's Hunter makes history in France
South African Robert Hunter of the Barloworld team won a wind-battered 11th stage of the Tour de France on Thursday after 182km of drama-filled racing between Marseille and Montpellier. The 30-year-old won a sprint finish just ahead of Swiss Fabian Cancellara and Brazilian Murilo Fischer to claim his, South Africa's and his continent's first-ever win in the race.
Nine from SA in line for top journalism award
The 26 finalists for the 2007 CNN MultiChoice African Journalist of the Year award were announced this week, with nine of them from South Africa, representing the print media, television and radio broadcasting spectrum. The South African finalists include five producers working with M-Net's news and actuality show Carte Blanche.
Zim's Coventry goes for gold in Algiers
Olympic champion Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe won two swimming gold medals on Saturday at the All Africa Games and was denied a silver when her team were disqualified from the 4x100m relay. In men's swimming, South Africa claimed two more gold medals, bringing the team's total haul of swimming golds to 12.
SA javelin star excels at world youth meet
Tazmin Brits, number one on the javelin world list and South Africa's best candidate for a gold medal, qualified in style for Sunday's final when the IAAF World Youth Athletics Championships continued in the Czech Republic on Saturday. Willem Voigt, of South Western Districts, was one of the sensations of the high-jump competition.
SA hurdler defeats world's best in Rome
South Africa's brilliant 22-year-old 400m hurdler LJ van Zyl issued a gutsy warning when he defeated a world-class field at the IAAF Golden Gala meet in Rome's Olympic Stadium on Friday night. His time of 48,24 seconds was a career best in a nail-biting finish against American Kerron Clement, 2007's fastest runner.
SA swimmers dominate in Algeria
South Africa continued to dominate swimming at the All Africa Games, winning five out of six gold medals on Friday. Amanda Loots won the women's 50m butterfly in 27,60 seconds, Melissa Corfe the women's 200m freestyle in 2:02,45, and Suzaan van Biljon the women's 200m breaststroke in 2:32,30.
Lost toddler survives night in snow, rain
A two-year-old who got lost on a farm near Jansenville in the Eastern Cape survived a night alone in the snow and rain, police said on Wednesday. Ronaldo Spogter toddled along behind his deaf grandfather, who was unaware of him, climbed over two barbed-wire fences and spent a mid-winter night outside.
Top SA wheelchair athlete up for grand award
South African wheelchair marathon athlete Krige Schabort will hope to join Tiger Woods and Lance Armstrong as a winner of an ESPY Award following his nomination for best male athlete with a disability. The event takes place on July 15 in Hollywood and is modelled on the Grammy and Academy Awards.
