News - Various new SNK tidbits - Virtual Console support + more

Posted by Ron Kimberly at 06:12:01 PM EST on 5.15.2006.

Advanced Media Network recently sat down with Ben Herman, SNK Playmore USA President, discussing various things like Metal Slug Anthology and Nintendo's virtual console. Here are a few highlights:

· SNK wishes to support Nintendo's Virtual Console; in fact, Mr. Herman revealed through e-mail that he will be talking with Nintendo of America tomorrow to see about bringing past NES/SNES titles to Virutal Console (Nintendo hasn't asked about SNK's AES/Arcade titles)
· Metal Slug Anthology (for Wii) will take advantage of Nintendo WiFi; exactly what this means isn't clear yet.
· SNK vs. Capcom: Card Fighters Clash for DS will also feature WiFi play. They are also looking into the prospect of releasing additional cards for sale, similar to Magic the Gathering Online for PC or the recently announced Marvel Trading Card Game for DS and PSP.
· They've run into problems with Xbox Live Arcade; apparently there isn't enough memory available to run some of their old arcade games.
· King of Fighters: Another Day (short KoF OVA series) will be released in the US in some fashion, possibly as a preorder bonus for King of Fighters 2006 (Maximum Impact 2 in Japan).

And that about sums up the new/most important topics. Overally, a really interesting interview. Hopefully within the next few days we'll have some information on how the meeting between Ben and NoA worked out.

Natiahs -

When you say 50 MB for the Xbox Live Arcade game size limit, did you mean 50 mega BYTEs or 50 mega BITs?

what natiahs said is most likely the reason, as many snk games are over 150MB. i'd definitely buy garou motw, ever kof, rotd, and ss if they were available for wii

Part of the spec for Xbox Live Arcade is that games must be smaller than 50MB. I'm sure that's what Mr. Herman meant when he said XBLA doesn't have enough memory to run some of the older arcade games.

If they can't get any of their older games on Live, I am not so sure about the future of seeing them on Wii's set up.

Although if Metal Slug Anthology sells well enough, SNKP might start pumping out more classic collections on Wii.

P.O.W., Baseball Stars, Crystalis, Athena

Those are the only 4 I can think of at the moment, but those are all games I would download!

OH WAIT... IKARI WARRIORS!!!! HOLY CRAP!

Not just that but gems ike Art of Fighting series would also be sweet.

I can see SNK sorting out some arcade love if things go well on Wii. Last Blade and Last Blade 2 please.

SNK haven't had much dealings with Nintendo since the SNES era so I'm sure after the Neo Geo's demise they'll be looking to get their games more recognition that wasn't possible due to Neo Geo and its high prices for games, competition etc.

That new VC pad is looking very attractive all of a sudden.

Come on Sega, give us some Saturn and DC love on VC next.

Not enough memory available to run some of their old arcade games? What does that mean?

Without actually knowing the discrepancy of the variables involved behind releasing SD3 as a DS title versus doing so only for the Virtual Console, it's impossible for me to continue discussion of the issue in a meaningful way. I will therefore leave it at this - you may have a point. I'm not entirely swayed on it, but it at least deserves consideration.

Now that you mention it, ambitious little groups translate stuff like SD3 for free. It wouldn't be that a big deal for Square to do it, now that you mention that they don't even have to redo the instruction book, packaging, or spend anything on advertising.

And SNK made Crystalis? I had totally forgotten about that. THAT's one I'd go back and play again.

Arcade games on console? What's stopping them? Supposedly the VC will be very indie-games-friendly. Could you simply re-engineer a game like Samurai Showdown to run through the VC software?

"I can't see a company such as Square returning back to translate a title such as Seiken Densetsu III when the game would only be sold at $5-10, especially when they could put the effort to far greater benefit by releasing a port on a system like the Nintendo DS and charge $30-$40 dollars instead."

Why not? There are no manufacturing, packaging, or shipping costs involved. There is no inventory to worry about, very little marketing worries, no shelf space/life competition...

Besides, I'd be willing to pay an extra $5 or $10 for a newly-translated game. If Valve and Ritual can offer HL2 Episode One and SiN Episodes for $20, I think Square-Enix can competently translate and release SD3. Hell, they can probably even fix the slowdown. And that money will be almost pure profit.

Besides, I wouldn't be able to stand SD3 on a screen as small as the DS'. A game as gorgeous as that needs a TV set. My TV set.

Does this mean I get to play Crystalis on my Wii? Sign me up!

blkstarr 5.15.2006 at 06:45:38 PM
I'd reason that it depends upon the pricing structure, terp. I can't see a company such as Square returning back to translate a title such as Seiken Densetsu III when the game would only be sold at $5-10, especially when they could put the effort to far greater benefit by releasing a port on a system like the Nintendo DS and charge $30-$40 dollars instead. Offering the game over the Virtual Console for a heightened price compared to the other SNES titles would also be counterproductive to their plight as it would likely alienate those gamers who may have been interested in the title, but feel that the title isn't necessarily worth the additional bucks. Truth be told there isn't much difference between pushing it for a few more dollars over the Virtual Console and overcharging for it on the DS, but the PERCEPTION of their quality in regards to each platform's average MSRP plays a profound role in acceptance.

It'd be fantastic if SNK offered arcade classics on the Virtual Console. :D

There really aren't that many NES/SNES titles by them that I'd really want. Oh well. Not like I'll be forced to get them. The more the merrier.

MS Anthology would be SO fantastic with online co-op.
