Comfy and capable – but pricey
40 years ago the Hyundai Motor Corporation created its first car -- the Pony -- and it was a dismal failure. The few cars that were shipped to Nigeria (and a handful of other countries) experienced a host of problems, which included the vinyl peeling off the roof as a result of the harsh African sun.
Break out of the rat race
You trundle along through your daily activities -- drive to work, drive home, drive to gym, drive home -- and you never really consider how much time you spend behind the steering wheel of your car. That is until you find a vehicle that’s not completely manic in nature, but stirs the senses enough to make you realise that it’s not about getting from Point A to Point B anymore.
    Jeep-ers!
As 4X4 wagons go, I've had two favourites for the past year or so. The Toyota Fortuner and GM's Hummer H3 appeal to me because they offer acceptable comfort levels, genuine off-road capabilities and are relatively well-priced. Just about everything else is either too fancy and expensive to take into the bush, or inadequate for really serious use off-road, writes Gavin Foster.
    The world's fastest Indian
With earnings of maybe R40-million from the movie The World's Fastest Indian, Sir Anthony Hopkins did much better from Herbert James Munro's love for his 1920 Indian Scout than the eccentric genius from New Zealand did. Gavin Foster looks at the life of Munro, one filled with crashes and motorcycle maintenance.

    Africa's most powerful two-wheeler
How many of you have ever seen an eight-time world champion hustle a 500-horsepower motorcycle down the drag strip in anger? Now's your chance, because Ricky Gadson's here to break in Africa's most powerful two-wheeler -- the newly arrived Bear Ghost Rider Kawasaki ZX-12R Turbo.
    An unlikely green victory
A biofuelled Aston Martin winning a major-league motorsport event in Britain? My Lord! Well, actually, there's one of those involved as well, and he's a politician to boot. Lord Paul Drayson is the United Kingdom's Minister of Defence Procurement, responsible for spending billions of pounds each year on updating Britain's armed forces.
    What blood type are you?
During the launch of the Honda Civic Type-R, we asked assistant to Honda’s MD, Seki Inaba, why South Africa hadn’t received any Honda hybrid vehicles yet. His answer was one that epitomised why so many Honda customers love this brand. Inaba explained that Honda headquarters in Japan was not happy with the quality of fuel in South Africa and it was therefore unwilling to make its hybrids available to us.
    A scarce exotic
Elvis Presley put three bullets into his when it wouldn’t start, but most owners of the other 7 300 or so De Tomaso Panteras produced between 1970 and 1993 loved ’em, because they looked and sounded absolutely gorgeous, and delivered supercar performance at affordable prices. Pity about the build quality though …
    Simply superb
Having established the sports activity vehicle segment in 1999, BMW was pretty cocky that the second generation X5 would once again prove to be the act that everyone else would follow. Distancing the new X5 from sports utility vehicles (SUVs), BMW emphasised that the new release was about superior agility and driving dynamics.
    I’m sorry I lied …
Sleek from nose to tail, with just the right amount of muscle thrown in here and there, the BMW 3-Series coupé represents a harmonious blend of elegance and performance. Inside the two-door coupé, comfort is the central theme, with even the two rear seats offering decent enough space for two fairly tall adults.
    Unbearable brightness of beams
These days we know her as Madge. She’s married, lives in England, has a few sprogs and writes children’s books. In the Eighties and Nineties, Madonna ruled the airwaves in a clinical fashion, using her cut-throat business acumen to turn her talent into the kind of empire that no modern pop princess could ever live up to.
Volvo's new C30 is a job well done
The last time Sweden went to war was in 1814, when it mopped up the placid old Norwegians in just 20 days. Now, with the launch of the new Volvo C30, the normally peace-loving Scandinavians have taken on the mob at which they resisted having a crack in the last major conflict in Europe -- the Germans and the Italians.
