Tenchu Z goes gold, demo due soon
Long-running medieval stealth-action series to debut on Xbox 360 June 12; demo hits Live tomorrow.
Last October, Microsoft and From Software released Tenchu Senran, the latest in K2's long line of ninja games, in Japan. Then, in January, Microsoft confirmed it would be brining the game to the Xbox 360 domestically, bearing the more Western-language-friendly title Tenchu Z.
Today, Microsoft sends word that the game has gone gold and is set for release June 12. The game's stealth kills and feudal assassinations earned it an M for Mature rating, and the game will retail for $59.99. Gamers who missed out on the Japanese Tenchu demo, released under Microsoft's Bringing It Home campaign during last year's Tokyo Game Show, will be happy to know a US-region demo will be available sometime tomorrow.
Featured in this latest installment in the long-running series are the ninja's tried-and-true bag of explosives and other accoutrements, as well as a new stealth-kill system, a new shadow-detection system, and a range of character-customization options. Online co-op play for two to four players will also be available over Xbox Live. For more, check out GameSpot's previous coverage.

I played one other Tenchu game other than this one, and I thought to myself "why do my friends like this crap!?"
Then I played this game. It wasn't exactly great, but it was actually pretty fun pulling off all these ninja-esque stealth maneuvers and kills. Now all they have to do is make the environments a little more detailed, make the AI just a little bit better (hopfully hard mode is accessable, because this demo was stupid easy) and make the actual fighting system a LOT better. When you don't stealth kill someone, and don't turn and run like you should, just standing and fighting is frustrating and really REALLY bad. And boss fights suck too, fix those. If they did that, I would be very happy. As far as the graphics, I don't care, a game is a game. I'm not taking this one seariously, so graphics don't matter.
this game's lack of details and mostly in the environment will be etched into the back of my eyes for the rest of my life.
Even Ultimate Alliance has better environmental detail than this and I'm wondering why it looks like they are not going for gameplay or graphics, but hopefully taking money from those fans who loved all the other Tenchu games.
It's just like chrome hounds where they just wanted to see if the 360 could run this game and if people would buy it.
I wish the environment looked less flat with smeared and malformed details and a bit more effort put into it.
As soon as I get this game thats all im looking at I won't feel like I'm actualy somewhere being a ninja, I'll feel like I'm playing a game, owning someone in which a last generation console could run if it didn't have good anti aliasing.
WHY DID THEY EVER TAKE OUT THE LEVEL EDITOR?? That was simply the BEST part of these games. I will not even think about buying one of these till they bring it back!!!
Looking forward to getting my hands on it and giving it a shot.
I have low expectations for this game. I hope From Software surprises us all.
I didn't like the Japanese version, and I doubt that they improved much for the US release. This will be a pass. FROM SOFTWARE ruined Tenchu.
don't ever compare Tenchu to Splinter Cell, its not half as Stealthy as Splinter Cell. The new Tenchu game is gonna be horrible, i got the japanese demo that came out last September and it was dreadful. the game engine from 1998s original does not hold up well at all compared to the newer stealth / ninja games.
To Toadstool1969:
What the hell is wrong with you? Dont ever compare Tenchu to Ninja Gaiden . Ninja Gaiden is the Devil May Cry of ninja games. Tenchu is the Splinter Cell of ninja games, well actually its the other around for Tenchu and Splinter Cell, sense Tenchu has been out a lot longer
It is far too soon for the game to be ready. If it were me I would give it another 6-7 months.
Nice, another must buy for the 360!
I love the Tenchu series!
Sounds good. Hope it plays as well as Ninja Gaiden.
I liked and own the old Tenchu titles even the first one that came out for Xbox. So I'm looking forward to the new one. I just hope that they fixed the player movement, and camera issues that plagued the older games. They were good for their time, but broken by todays standards. It also looks like the combat hasn't been improved. It seems like if you are attacking and the enemy moves you can get stuck in doing a retarded slashing animations at thin air. I hated that about the old ones, but loved the whole concept they were trying to get across. Maybe the demo can persuade me to buy it, instead of just renting it.
I'll check out the demo, but from what I've seen it's just more Tenchu. The graphics, based on what I've seen, still look like those from a PS2 game. My expectations are in the crapper, so if it turns out to be decent it should be a pleasant surprise.
i played the jap version and couldn't figure out the buttons, so maybe now i will know what to do.
Cool. It's always nice to get a new demo to try out. I've never played any of the Tenchu games before so I'm looking forward to trying this one out. It may be the kind of ninja game to tide me over until Ninja Gaiden 2.
I'm interesting in trying this out. Haven't played any Tenchu since probably PS1, or early PS2 days. I don't remember much about it, it'll be interesting to see how it looks on the 360. And now you may commence with the Tenchu bashing...
Splinter Cell will always be the stealth action game for me
