Show Notes

This week's podcast is packed full of discussion from the GAF editors about all the news you've been reading on the front page, and some you haven't. We also talk with our Japanese correspondent David Cochran and get an update on what's happening with gaming culture overseas.

Are the current prices of games justifiable? Is downloadable content worth the money? Those are just some of the issues we explore this week. If you prefer to listen to the show out of order or just in pieces, you can use the show notes link above for navigation purposes.

If you have any comments, you can leave them below or email them to podcast@gamesarefun.com

Enjoy.

Yes, though they're on hiatus. However, April (GAF's 5th birthday) isn't over yet, and we may have a few surprises left... *hint hint*

As for guest editorials, you'd have to ask the man himself. To my knowledge, we haven't done them in the past.

Hey, never said I wasn't creative. An expanded version of the analogy could actually make for an interesting blog entry, and/or guest editorial. (GAF DOES have editorials... right?)

Terpfen, man, that was an awesome football analogy. Still chuckling over that one.

"Hey terp, there's some brown stuff on your nose. Better wipe it off. :P

*snip*

"I also believe I'm in love with Josh."

In the immortal words of Phoenix Wright... OBJECTION! There is clearly a contradiction here, Your Honor!

is that so, rich? It was you being a complete lunatic tyrant which drove me out in the first place you know!

When we recorded it, my local time was around 4 p.m. But in Japan it was pretty early in the morning (16 hours ahead if I recall).

oh by the way just how early was it when you talked to David? I could have sworn I even heard a toilet flush.

Hey terp, there's some brown stuff on your nose. Better wipe it off. :P

Weekly would be brilliant. We've got a good number of staffers and core members here, and could do a variety of things on the show. (My music offer still stands.) I also believe I'm in love with Josh.

Rich likes "Your Excellency", actually. He told me personally. And by told I mean ordered it to be so on pain of death.

Please, Godrumlord (how's that?), let it be weekly.

"I think I like Justin better."

OH WHAT-EVER. If you still worked here, I'd fire you! ;)

We're shooting for weekly on this puppy. My major concert being-in/watching season ends this week so I can at least be available for weekly ones.

unforgivingedges 4.24.2007 at 09:59:19 PM
Well look at that. You're right, I meant bi-weekly. Sorry.

joshschw 4.24.2007 at 09:49:02 PM
i am pretty sure it's the other way around, think of a magazine that comes out 6 times a year. it's called bi-monthly, no?
+0 karma
unforgivingedges 4.24.2007 at 09:44:45 PM
I may be confusing terms here, but wouldn't bi-weekly mean twice a week? Whereas bi-monthly means twice a month (i.e., every 2 weeks?)

unforgivingedges 4.24.2007 at 09:18:18 PM
Yeah, we're working on getting more frequent episodes out, but we're still debating about various factors on when to implement that time format. Don't worry though; the ultimate goal is to have the podcast be weekly.

Also, ROFL at your sports analogy. Given my own sports dispositions, I would say that Microsoft fans are a lot like Anaheim Ducks fans: proudly enjoying newfound success while their crosstown rivals wither in hopeless limbo (a fact that saddnes me greatly, though next season looks promising).
+1 karma
terpfen 4.24.2007 at 09:12:07 PM
Also, you're right about console fans being just like sports team fans. If I may elaborate on your analogy, Sony fans are like Buffalo Bills fans: they're just pathetic, and they don't even know it. Microsoft fans are like Detroit Lions fans: by what flaw of creation can they possibly exist? And Nintendo fans are like New York Jets fans: loud, annoying, and with very little to be proud of except the distant past and the last six months.

Bi-monthly?!

A little part of my soul just shriveled up and died.

unforgivingedges 4.24.2007 at 08:56:34 PM
Whoops. Yeah, the GAF podcast is, as of right now, a bi-monthly broadcast. So check back again in 2 weeks.

terpfen 4.24.2007 at 08:48:09 PM
Well, by "the podcast," I meant the GAF Podcast. (Damn the NeoGAF forums for not only being a cesspool, but using the term GAFcast.) Though I'm eager to hear this Press Start episode about Megaman being whored out... which it isn't, but hey, I know I'm alone in my opinion there, just like I am in my opinion of the Dreamcast, which I'm still not posting because I know better.

unforgivingedges 4.24.2007 at 08:17:40 PM
Thank you, sir.

Yeah, I do the show every Wednesday and it goes up for download usually immediately thereafter. Sometimes it's later, but you can check via the homepage is pressstart.thefighting.org (Rich isn't always up to date with the posting of the links).

terpfen 4.24.2007 at 08:11:04 PM
I definitely agree about Justin having a pretty good voice for these podcasts. That college radio experience really helps.

So is the podcast on a weekly release schedule? I was really looking forward to the second episode.

"well both, You do have a good radio voice also I think."

Well thank you. I don't know if you've ever listened to it, but the links in the upper right corner of the page that say "Press Start" (under the Now Playing icon) link to the other gaming radio show I've been doing for 2 years at my university. I also podcast that one online (which is where the links take you). I should again give thanks to Rich for generously adding those to the site as I've gotten a lot more listeners via GAF that way.

Your log in issue might be your cookies acting up? Or maybe your Java?

"I like how Justins voice was very clear something that no ones was in the last one of these I heard. Does Rich usually lead these things btw? I think I like Justin better."

Thanks for the compliments. Are you specifically speaking of audio quality when you say clear, or just my manner of speech?

Because if you mean audio quality, that's because I'm hosting the recording and speaking into a professional radio mic that feeds into a high quality mixboard. And also because I'm the only one being directly fed to the recording without having to go through Skype, whereas the staff members on the other end are being input through Skype.

For the time being, I'm the one leading the podcast because of my access to good audio equipment.

good to hear Josh on it, he's a good guy, hopefully you'll make a reappearance.

I agree completely with the others, this podcast could use more fanboyism. Don't know what that means to the format? Take a look at this fine example of well-placed opinion in a news piece, and tell me that you didn't learn anything: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25LceCPO1ys

Wait... what?

jesusfreakdk 4.23.2007 at 11:12:50 PM
Ah, and another comment--I too would greatly appreciate getting some regular users onboard future podcasts. Personally I would love to see nekofrog or terpfen on the show, and perhaps other regular posters like i_like_pizza or azu. I'm tempted to offer myself, but unfortunately my gaming experience and knowledge is so narrow I'm not sure if I could contribute much to the discussion if anything at all.

However, if you ever do any kind of music segment (and I still VERY MUCH miss Rich's VG tune humming), I would be ecstatic to be on it. I was even playfully considering a 'Guess That Tune!' type section on the show, and I'm faily confident in my VG music...humming, but I'm not sure if that sort of silly idea would ever be implemented.

Anyway, great job and I'm very much looking forward to the next one.

As usual, nice job, guys. I guess I'm used to Justin's style since I've been listening to Press Start. It was good to hear some new people (Josh, you had the exact same voice I imagined :P) and some old (I listened to the old podcast Sam had). Some funny moments and some good two-sided discussions that remained very amiable and interesting. There were a few awkward pauses and Josh didn't talk much (possibly because he's got a lot to play XD), but otherwise no real gripes.

The section with Mr. Cochran I found was hilarious. He really did sound quite out of it, and the whole conversation, rather than being a chat between two staffers, seemed to be Justin as the focused, businesslike interviewer and David as the far-out special guest with a bit of the giggles. *Grin* Not that that's a bad thing by any means, but it just slowed down the pacing of the podcast a little bit. No offense whatsoever to Dave, he had some great information and he had just woken up.

And Justin, if you ever need some lovin', I'm just a short distance away. No review needed. :P

I'm split on Sam. On one hand, he dissed Oddworld, praised DC, and he was my new partner back when I did news here.

But never played PSO?!

Okay, I'm about 27 minutes in to the podcast so far. I'm tempted to write my thoughts about the Dreamcast, but everyone on this site would lynch me.

Don't make me look at that thing again. It's bad enough I actually bought it as a kid.

Still, it DOES look kind of like the controller in the logo... in terms of outline shape, that is.

Looks like the SNES Turbo Touch 360 controller more than a Genesis controller, honestly.

dj tempora 4.23.2007 at 11:40:25 AM
Nekofrog: and we're probably still willing to have you do one, at some point. ;o)

Terpfen: haha, it's actually a Genesis controller with PS2 style buttons. Sort of. I'm glad you like the logo.

Hey, nice podcast logo, even though I still get nightmares about how much the SNES controller hurt my hands when playing for long stretches.

The podcast is still downloading, and I'll post my thoughts after I listen to it. (Boy, did that sound familiar or what?)

God. Am I stoned in the podcast? I don't remember being stoned but I sure sound like I was. Maybe I should grab a coffee before we do this again. That or I can maybe wait a few hours after I wake up to do the interview rather than a few minutes. The rest of it sounds good, though.

That was a long one. I just got through listening. Good job guys. I couldn't make it this week, but I'm hoping to be on the next episode.
