Legal Services Bill [HL]

This Bill was not mentioned in the Queen’s Speech but appeared in the background notes.

Although not mentioned in the Queen’s Speech, the government is set to introduce a Legal Services Bill, following a draft Bill introduced to parliament in May 2006. The aim of the Bill would be to “ensure independent regulation of the legal profession and greater competition in the legal services market”.

The main aims of the legislation mean that all bodies are obligated to separate their representative and regulatory functions. It may also establish a Legal Services Board, which would have powers to oversee local regulatory bodies. An Office of Legal Complaints would also be established to ensure high standards and deal with consumer issues. Finally, the Bill would also aim to ensure fair competition in legal services.
