Led Zeppelin's Influences
Stairway to Heaven

In the All-Music Guide, Matthew Greenwald suggests that Led Zeppelin drew on "Taurus" by Spirit for "Stairway to Heaven." Led Zeppelin (who had toured with Spirit in 1968/1969) used a strikingly similar guitar melody as the basis for their now-classic "Stairway to Heaven," again proving that very little in rock & roll is wholly original." [1] "And She's Lonely" by the Chocolate Watchband also features a guitar pattern that is very similar to the opening of "Stairway to Heaven." Listen particularly to the section of "And She's Lonely" at about three minutes into the song and you'll hear the pattern, although it resolves a little differently.

Compilations of Original Versions

The liner notes for The Roots of Led Zeppelin mention that Page gently plucked the introduction to Taurus but the compilation includes Fresh Garbage rather than Taurus..
