The "Horst-Dohm-Eisstadion" was opened in 1974 and is located in Berlin-Wilmersdorf. It was the centre for speed skating in West-Berlin. Nowadays the rink hosts few competitions. However, in the 1970s and 1980s several German Championships and World Cup competitions were organized in Wilmersdorf. The highlights were the 1976 World Sprint Championships and the 1989 European Championships. The 1976 World Sprint Championships was badly influnced by the cold war, because it was boycotted by Soviet Union and other Eastern European countries for being held in West-Berlin. The previous year Sovietrussian skaters had won a triple triumph in Göteborg.
Out of tradition, the clubs "Berliner Schlittschuh-Club e.V." (BSC) and "Berliner Sportverein 1892 e.V." (BSV) still practice on this rink. Besides that, the rink is mainly used for public skating.
See Friedenauer Sportsplatz and Berlin Sportforum for more information on the speed skating history of Berlin.
Speed skaters from West-Berlin did not have as much success as the skaters from East-Berlin. Among the best were Andreas Lemcke, Thomas Nietsch and Anja Mischke.
