Introduction

TRS Logo
The Terminology Reference System (TRS) was created to provide a single source of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) terminology. The TRS is part of the centralized System of Registries (SoR), which provides access to the Agency's core registry systems.

Who might find information of interest in the TRS?

The TRS is available to those people interested in better understanding environmental data and terminology. The TRS should be helpful to the public interested in environmental information, environmental decision makers, regulation writers, and computer system developers. The TRS helps all these users to understand differences in definitions of environmental terms depending on the context of the term.

What does TRS contain?

Number of terms currently in the TRS: 11977
Number of submitting organizations represented in the TRS: 26
Number of information resources included in the TRS: 255

The TRS contains collections of environmental terms and definitions from many sources. In addition to environmental terms from the General Multilingual Environmental Thesaurus (GEMET), the TRS contains numerous sources of terminology from Agency program offices, information systems, and state collections. The TRS stores and displays hierarchical term collections. The content of the TRS supports the Agency's Data Standardization Process.

What is the future of the TRS?

The data in the TRS is periodically updated with new terminology collections and with collection submissions from users. The TRS will be used to generate a keyword list to support the searching capabilities of the Environmental Data Registry (EDR) and can provide keyword generation capabilities for other Agency Web resources. Multilingual capabilities are also being researched for future versions of the TRS. If you have suggestions for including additional data collections in the TRS or comments, please use the contact us form.

Please read the SoR Disclaimer for the Terminology Reference System.
