Canada was the first non-European member of the ISU, and the World Championships 1897 were held in Montreal, with Jack McCulloch from Winnipeg, Mantiboa winning the first - and to this day only male allround - Canadian World title. McCulloch placed 2nd on the 500 m, behind Norwegian Alfred Næss, and then he won the 5000 m. The 1500 m was inititally tied with Næss, but McCulloch won the deciding race 0,4 seconds ahead of Næss. McCulloch won the 10000 m with a large margin. But the 5000 m was declared invalid because one lap too few had been skated, and a new race was held four days later. With less than half of the competitors taking part McCulloch won this race easily.

McCulloch won the Canadian outdoor speed skating championships 1893 and 1897, and the US Nationals in 1896. As a professional skater, McCullogh fought many duels with Norval Baptie, a Canadian-born American.

Besides speed skating, McCulloch also played ice hockey (for the Winnipeg Victorias) and took part in cycling and rowing.
