Edvard Engelsaas, from Trondheim, won the Norwegian Championships in 1900, without competition from the European Champion - Peder Østlund, who set 4 World Records in Davos the same weekend. Two weeks later they were the big favourites for the World Championships in Kristiania. Østlund won the 500 m, but Engelsaas beat him by 9 seconds on the 5000 m. Østlund was tired after travelling home from Davos, and he gave up during the 1500 m, and Engelsaas won the World title.
Engelsaas had been a good figure skater earlier. His results in 1900 were a great surprise, and he never competed in international championships after this. Some years later he died from a heart disease.
Highest rank on the Adelskalender: 7 (1900)
