Reidar Liaklev, from Brandbu, became Olympic champion on 5000 m and European champion in 1948, both within a period of 15 days.
Like many skaters of his time, he lost some of his best years during the second World War, but he proved to be one of the best stayers in the first years after the war. He should have been fighting for his second olympic title on the 10000 m, but he got problems in the high altitude and didn't finish the race. But he got his revenge less than two weeks later when his 10000 m gave him the title in the European Championship.
Highest rank on the Adelskalender: 9 (1950)
