February 25, 2007 -- MIXED drinks and mixed signals - the formula for a classically horrible first date. The twist? Only one of the daters was aware of it. Find out what went wrong when Charles, a 37-year-old consultant, and Gie, a 36-year-old health-care professional, met up at Midtown restaurant Mint.

He said:

I was so engrossed in a project I was working on that, despite my best effort, I still got to Mint a bit late. Gie was already there. When she found me, she looked even better than her pictures, with beautiful long hair, and she was dressed stylishly in this nice, silky dress. I'm a leg man, so the first thing I noticed was the skirt - and her great legs.

Gie, on the other hand, looked kind of surprised when she met me. She hadn't seen my picture, so she didn't know what to expect. But her reaction could've been just because I was late.

I'd only had Indian food once before, but we got some great dishes to share. Their chicken curry was delicious, and Mint was a good date spot, with candles and a low ceiling.

Gie is a lovely girl, very smart and well mannered. However, she was a bit guarded, and it was kind of hard for me to loosen her up. I'm the type of person to just start talking with people, and I love to make people laugh. That was actually one of the first things she really commented on. She was like, "You know, you're really funny." And I took that as a good sign - hey, at least she's not having a terrible time.

Then the photographer came by and was like, "Can you throw an arm around her?" Gie got pretty into it, but I was kind of like, "Uh, I don't know if we're at the 'throw an arm around her' stage yet." Still, I liked the fact that Gie was playful for the photos.

By 11, we were finishing up dinner, and Gie suggested we get a drink. If I didn't have to get up early the next day, I would've been game. I had to turn her down, but it was more a matter of circumstance than a refusal.
