Personal Products

Every day, Canadians use many different cosmetics and personal care products such as shampoo, shaving cream and lipstick. Visiting tanning beds and lying in the sun are also popular pursuits. Health Canada's aim is to ensure that the personal products you use are safe and that you know how to use them properly, and that you are informed on the risks associated with solar UV radiation.

How does Health Canada help keep you safe?

We work with industry and the public to help prevent product-related injuries and to promote safety and the safe use of cosmetics and other personal consumer products. We also encourage the design of safer products for the Canadian market by providing importers and manufacturers with hazard and product technical information.

The Department takes action on several fronts. Health Canada:

  • Conducts research on potential risks associated with cosmetics and other personal consumer products,
  • Raises awareness of potential risks of injury through our product safety advisories, warnings and recalls,
  • Develops and enforces product safety regulations and standards, and
  • Provides channels for reporting a product-related injury or safety-related issue with a cosmetic or personal consumer product.
