Boat Wreck Charges, Cory Lidle Update, Midwest Meteor Showers, Apple-Apple Peace and More: News Briefs

After we investigated what went wrong in the capsizing that killed 20, the captain and cruise line owner of the Ethan Allen tour boat have been charged with criminal misdemeanors, and several legislative changes may follow.

And after our resident pilot gave us an inside look at what might have gone wrong in Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle’s fatal turn (listen to podcast here), the NTSB released new details as a follow-up for its investigation into the Cirrus crash.

Great balls of fire! That’s what several people across the middle of the country reported seeing streak across the sky Sunday night. Officials aren’t counting out a meteor shower, just like they’re not taking a killer asteroid for granted.

The Beatles and Apple have finally settled their beef. Now that the people have conquered, you can download the band’s classic library from iTunes and onto your MP3 player of choice, rather than having to transfer your old records.

Across the pond, leading phone carriers are lining up to challenge Google with a mobile search engine killer app. Maybe you won’t need that iPhone after all—especially when you can wirelessly use your smartphone to get online.

The Boy Mechanic

Culled from a half-century of Popular Mechanics issues (make that the first half of last century), The Boy Mechanic represents an age when imagination could conquer far more than the checkbook — when solving a problem was more satisfying than paying to have it go away.
