UK game charts: January 20-27

Lost Planet shakes off The Burning Crusade to rediscover the top slot, while football titles continue to prove popular.
By Phil Elliott, GameSpot UK
Posted Jan 30, 2007 4:21 am PT

It was all change at the top of the UK all-formats chart for the week of January 20-27 as Lost Planet: Extreme Condition found its way back to number one. The previous week's top achiever, Blizzard's World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade, slipped down to five, while football titles FIFA 07 and Pro Evolution Soccer 6 took second and third, respectively.

Wii Play rose seven places to four, although the other Wii-exclusive title, WarioWare Smooth Moves, dropped to six. World Snooker Championship 2007 (World Pool Championship 2007 in the US) fell one place to seven, and Need for Speed Carbon did likewise, dropping to eight.

Another title that did well was the animated movie tie-in Cars, which found its way back into the top 10 this week in ninth place. Call of Duty 3 rounded things off at 10, down two from last week.

There were no new entries inside the top 40 this week, but there are a handful of titles that should make some impact on next week's list. These include strategy game Europa Universalis III, arcade classics bundle Sega Megadrive Collection (Sega Genesis Collection in the US), and Atari's game version of the Arthur and the Invisibles film.

I love this Game, but the whole Thermal Energy pack kill's it. I love the graphics, guns, Xbox live, & mostly everthing about it. Only if there was multiplayer for 4 players in one screen...... And im surprised that cars got top ten. I dont blame them, my little brother even got that game.

@miiiguel With a Japanese game, remember. This time of year there is no PS2 competition. If Capcom release this game on PS2, would sale a lot of more. God of War will be out soon. With 100 million vs 10 million, should be a easy win.

Don't think for one moment that game developers aren't noticing that the 360 has this tiny installed base yet most new releases for it end as a top selling titles. The math is pretty easy to deduce, 360 owners are willing to buy games, it is no wonder almost every week we see another "exclusive" title get a 360 version.

Dude, i WORK in a second hand store, i've served lots of customers who like the Wii, btu feel there is not enough of a selection of games yet, and are selling it for the mediocre profit so they can wait and buy it again further down the line.

Yes there are also people scalping them, i am fully aware of that fact. But there are also a large number of people taking advantage of the hightened demand, while being underwhelmed with the Wii's current gaming selection, people who fully intend to buy one at a later date, but not with the consoles current weak selection of games.

Don't get me wrong, i love the thing, but currently, it has next to nothing to play, Zelda is not very good, i played it all the way through before you ask, and Wario Ware will get boring quickly for a single player junkie like myself, although it is a truly awesome game.

There will be a much larger selection come march.

munsoned USA numbers come out each month. However NPD has put the skids to a lot of posting about the numbers since the NPD charges several grand for that data. Gamespot has never posted compelte NPD data nor the game sale numbers which other sites like Neogaf.com do.

"People are selling their Wii's, in droves"

No they are scalping them from the stores to sell for more money since they got burned on the PS3 or figure they will get burned when it launches in Europe.

Most people who bought a wii bought it for themselves. When the PS3 scalping price fell below retail the scalpers went for the wii.

This happens in Japan with the DS lite which is sold second hand for more then retail. Wii used price is more then retail in Japan. Once again scalpers.

I'm more than a little puzzled at the World Pool Championship 2007 entry. I would never have thought a pool game would be outselling Call of Duty 3.

I suppose because it's on all but one platform, Cars was bound to get sold, but damn... it's a shame to see a shoddy movie tie-in beat so many other great games.

I wonder how many copies of FIFA 07 (all platforms) and PES6 (all platforms) have been sold up to this point....

And I'm impressed to see that people keep on buying Wii Play. I thought the holiday craze had died down a bit, I mean, in most of the stores near my house you can now find plenty of accessories for the Wii (not the console itself though), Nunchuck and Wiimote included.

I was waiting for assassins creed to come out instead of buying lost planet because knowing how short it is I didnt think it was going to be a very good game. Of course the day after it came out I saw gamespot's new review and decided to go ahead and buy the game. Now I need to scrounge up more money to buy assassins creed but atleast as far as middle aged titles go I'm perfectly content with oblivion for now. Lost planet is a great game but can get very irritating when playing on the middle defeculty or higher, which is no big problum for me since I have lots of time p.s. fantasy facade I have yet to buy a copy of cars and I don't ever plan to so heres one person who can stay above that stupid game -_-

Go lost planet! Wooh!

Tesley: People are selling their Wii's, in droves, because second hand shops are STILL offering cash values over the retail price of the Wii, so even people originally intending to keep their Wii's have been selling them. That's why no Zelda, also, the fact it's not really very good, puts a lot of people in the situation i was in on the 360's release, why buy it? What's the point currently?

I kept mine, wish i hadn't though, no point in selling it now though i spent too much on VC games. It will have a lot of good games come march though, and owning one then will be well worth it.

Lost planet baby, not till i get paid though ;_;

Well done Lost Planet! Yet another 360 game at the top. Wii play, selling more than zelda and wario? You know why dont you, its because of that free wii remote!

Slowly but surely, the ps2 is being knocked down that list. Suddenly I think to myself, how can a ps3 game (costing £10 more than a 360 game) get to come on the charts if the console is SO expensive.
This is why a lot of games are appearing on the 360. People in the UK have also been surprised by the 360 games, and the things it is doing right. It is creating a new name for itself, which is great.

Ps2 always sells well over here, but I have noticed a sudden slump in sales. Only the "popular" games seem to get any recognition now, any game which bends things a different way (i.e no rule of the rose for us...) won't get a chance, the ps2 library is almost TOO big now for a company to generate any signs of profit for games which ARENT sequels.

New and inspiring games usually will only now sell well on new and aspiring game consoles, Warioware - if on the ps2 - would sell horribly. Also if Wii play was an eye-toy game - it would dive, in my opinion.

Ps2 will slowly begin to fade away, prices of the console will fall dramatically when the ps3 gets its foot ready to put in the door. Somehow, except metal gears solid 4, I doubt that any ps3 games will make it into the charts.
The rate the wii, DS and 360 are selling, it will be hard to get a top quality ps3 game on there, especially if the audience is limited (as in, people to buy mgs4 would only be limited to people who own a ps3... which wont be many, a few million by the end of the year, if quarter of those people buy mgs4, this means that the game potentially will only even get to the very bottom of the chart).

PSP games (even though the results are for all platforms) you might not see a psp game on the list, because the amount of psp users is a lot lower than DS users, meaning if a game on the DS gets "average" sales, this means that because of the amount of users for the DS, and AVERAGE sales figure might be something like 800,000 copies... An xbox 360 title can sell about 600,000 copies in one holiday period, in the case of gears of war, 3 million copies! But then there are 10 million 360 users, well, nearly 11 million.
When the wii and the DS catch up, it will be hard for Sony to push themselves up the charts. Unless they do something "cool".... Wandering what that could be could kill you..

Once again UK sales are cumulative for all formats Therefore Fifa , Pro evo , NFS , cars and Call of duty are sales for the PS2 , 360 , xbox , GC, DS,GBA and PC all rolled into one ... that said most of the sales would be PS2
