Barking Town Centre

Town Square and Barking Lifelong Learning Centre

We are redeveloping the Town Square to create an attractive new public space in the heart of Barking. The new development will provide new homes, shops, offices, leisure facilities and a new learning centre.

The key elements of the development are:

The Lifelong Learning Centre

The Lifelong Learning Centre (LLC) centre is at the heart of the Town Square project and is being funded by the Department for Communities and Local Government, the University of East London, Barking College and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

The aim of the LLC is to provide improved public library services, widen participation in learning and enable health, social care and education professionals to develop and grow. The LLC will also become a centre of excellence for education and skills development for key workers in the public sector.

The range of facilities on offer at the LLC will include a host of classrooms for adult learning, gallery space, Library Express Service, Children's Library and a Toy Library leading to a library garden, an atrium, Reference Library, lecture theatre, bookshop, training rooms and crèche.

The Lighthouse

An 11 storey building, fronting on to Ripple Road, and consists of shops at ground level with 54 2-bed flats above.

The Arc

A curved edged building running from Ripple Road into the Town Square. It will contain shops at ground level with 4 floors of offices above.

Garden Housing area

A Garden Housing area will be constructed above the Library and Learning Centre, comprising 6 floors of 206 flats.

Courtyard Housing and Car Park

A 14 storey building comprising 4 storeys of car parking and 10 storeys of flats above behind the existing library. The car park will consist of 141 surface and basement spaces.
