Glorious Super Mario 3 Wall Art

It wouldn't be a lazy Friday afternoon without a story about someone putting an image of a popular video game character somewhere it normally wouldn't be. This time around it's-a-him, Mario, if what I assure you is the best game he ever appeared in.The mural is painted by GayGamer.net reader teknomcr on the wall of his indubitably expensive Hollywood apartment.

The enemies look good, but the Mario sprite seems off. Also, they should have used a ruler for the ground.

Vista Problems for Casual Developers

GameDaily has posted an excellent feature highlighting the concerns of casual devs in regards to Windows Vista game programming issues. In the light of the upcoming January 31st release of the new operating system, small developers are worried about the cost of making Games for Windows.

Banzai, it's already the situation on consoles, and it really seems to not be an issue.

"If they were able to put a NR flag on their game, it would probably get automatically blocked by parental controls unless it was set to allow all ratings."

Consoles that have parental controls (Xbox, 360, Wii) default to "Allow all Ratings". No reason to think Vista won't.

Can't they just put a "Not Rated (NR)" flag in their software?

This Day in Gaming, January 12th

1999: Intel announces the PIII processor. Prices start at $580 for 450 MHz. When you think about being an early adopter to any computer hardware, keep that number in mind. 2000: Nintendo of America announces that the N64 will come in new colored versions: ice, fire, smoke, jungle, watermelon, and grape. I don't know whether to be hungry or run for help. Mark Wilson Have gaming history, trivia, or famous birthdays you'd like to see in TDIG?

The New Tetris is still a staple multiplayer game around my place. Also one of the only N64 games to use the D Pad (and hence, have access to the L button)!

We're Sending Two to the Tokyo Game Show

What. A. Contest. You want to go to Japan? With a friend? And not *just* Japan, but the Tokyo Game Show. Here's the deal: Today, we're kicking off a contest that will run through the end of March. We're going to run three (count 'em) trivia questions over this period in the form of sponsored polls. Today's is brought to you by Old Spice thank-you-very-much.

As others have noted, and I'm sure all have realized, no matter how hard the questions are, it'd be damn easy for anyone to just Google the answer anyway, so who cares? Basically the contest is open to all Kotaku readers, so get ready for some crazy odds.

Multi-Tap: A Week In Comments

Developers Protest Slamdance Game Festival I have to say, I do understand and respect the reasoning of the Slamdance sponsors, and subsequently the response of the Slamdance festival itself. While I don't agree with it at all, it's business (money) that really has the final say most of the time. The problem as I see it with video games as an art form is in its short and largely one-dimensional history.

Have you ever played a game made using RPGMaker2000? Why was it in the festival in the first place? I've made better games using my ass as code and toilet paper as a medium.

Clip: Wii Charge Stations, New PS3 Controller

Nyko shows off some of their cool upcoming accessories in this clip. My favorite two, I think are the Wii charging station and new PS3 controller. Though some of that DS Lite stuff is cool too. Brian Crecente

Looks like the worst controller ever. Not even kidding. My Lord.

GameCube Lingers On, New Shooter Announced

Spurred on by cheap development costs and the Cube's SHMUP community, O3 Entertainment have decided that "next-gen" just isn't for them, and will be releasing Milestone's (Chaos Field) Radio Allergy on the system. O3 marketing man Mike Pepe: With the prices that you can sell a GameCube title for, it's a lot more reasonable currently than going with the Wii, which of course is a lot more expensive for us to garner [titles for] and also a lot more expensive for the customer to...

Kotaku Magu: This Week's Famitsu Scores (Gears of War Edition)

For the late-comers, Japanese magazine Famitsu has four editors award points on a 1-10 scale with 10 being the best. Here's this week's: Bionicle Heroes (PS2) — 6, 6, 6, 5Shining Force Ikusa (PS2) — 9, 9, 8, 9.hack//G.U. Vol.

I've noticed that the 360 appears to suck at displaying pre-rendered cutscenes, as the few games that have them (as well as Xbox games that have them) seem to get all choppy when the CG starts up. I've assumed this is one of the reasons CG in 360 games seems to be a rarity. Considering Blue Dragon contains 3 DVDs worth of CG, am I to expect huge headaches down the road?
