Cake Mania On The DS

Majesco keeps the cooking games rolling out with the upcoming baking extravaganza, Cake Mania. Based on the PC and online game of the same name by Sandlot Games, Cake Mania turns you in to the proprietor of a busy bakery where you must bake and decorate cakes for your ever increasing number of picky customers. The puzzler will be coming out on the DS later this year, along with it's sequel.

They should make a DS game where you use the game DS as a remote control for a robot or a car, and RC (or BT) a car around the room... maybe use it to pick up pics too from the robot/car...

Or use it to PROGRAM the easy bake oven...

Is that too tangential?

Dead or Alive Flick Goes Straight To DVD?

In a move that surprise just about no one, it appears that Corey Yuen's "film" adaptation of the Dead or Alive series of video games will not make it to US theaters. Instead, the film will see its DVD premiere this April. Lucky Europeans have already had the good fortune to see the $21 million T&A; martial arts flick, as it premiered across the Atlantic in a number of countries as early as September of 2006. I'm off to hug my Kasumi pillow and cry myself to sleep over this horrible news.

Offensive to asians?

I thought most of the characters in DOA are caucasian... at least they're rendered that way in the videogame.

If anybody should be mad, it's black people, because of that Dennis Rodman clone who is every worst racist stereotype of what Asians think American Black people are like.

I want to see the movie on TV someday... I love Jaime Pressly

SCEA: We Dominated December

The thing about numbers is that there are tons of ways to look at them. Take for instance The NPD Group's official numbers for video game console sales in the U.S. You could say that Microsoft is winning, you could say Nintendo is winning, or you could say Sony is winning. I can honestly say I can see where all three companies are coming from. But since I've only heard officially from Sony so far, this is their moment in the sun.

Oh my God. Let me give Sony a wake-up note. This afternoon, prior to my impending deployment, I made some calls to around eight retailors. I simply wanted to trade my PSP and some games for a DS Lite and some games. Well, there are NO DS Lites in my area (Balto-DC) at the EB Games/Gamestop/Gamecrazy and there will be no DS LItes until the end of January. PS3s? Check. PSPs? Check. Wiis? No. DS Lites? No.

Sorry Sony, you did not dominate anything but shelf space in December.

Actually it's Jan 11, and there are no DS Lites in the Northern VA. I have a kid in the hospital whose parents want to buy a DS lite... and they just called every major retailer within 30 miles, and NOBODY has any.

DS Lites come in 1-2x/week at Toys R Us... but the Wiis are not showing up often. Best Buy doesn't let them deliver in back (because employees might scarf them). The employee told me they deliver through FRONT door, and first come first served.

My estimate of Wii production was between 800,000-1,000,000/month... based on the predictions for stock availability through March, and based on when they started making them before launch...

Nintendo announced DS production at 2.2 million ramping to 2.5 million/month.

Yet they're completely sold out everywhere.

Meanwhile, I'm curious if Sony made any money at all on hardware this holiday season... since even though 2.3 million (PSPs & PS2s combined), they probably make $30/unit on those at most...

Meanwhile, they sell 500,000 PS3s at about $400 loss on the 20 GB and $350 on the 60 GB model...

Let's just call it $350 x 500,000

Even 22.4 million software units x $15 profit/disk... Sony may have barely broken even for the Holidays. I doubt they made much money, if any.

Legal Woes Aside, iPhone To Rumble With PSP and DS

Newsweek's N'Gai Croal pinged us with his take on how the iPhone will shake things up. He blogs: The iPhone isn't a direct challenger to Sony's portable gaming ambitions--that would be the wildly popular Nintendo DS--but it most certainly is a threat to Sony's mobile media and communication ambitions. After all, the iPod has iTunes (with music, movies, TV and games); while the PSP has the Playstation Network (for PS2 games that can run on the PSP's emulator and...

Don't see how this can affect DS use. Iphone is sexy, closed, piece of tech, and because it's not "open" it's not a PLATFORM.

It doesn't upgrade, it doesn't make you buy other stuff to support it. I think it's a mistake to make it so closed. They should make it WIDE OPEN.

Therefore, there is nothing to make people want to stick with it when the next nice piece of tech comes along. Only way for Apple to PROTECT whatever market it creates is by putting out GREAT product after GREAT product... eventually they will trip and be caught by the many competitors.

Plus it's just so expensive.

Team3D Kicked My Ass In Counter-Strike At CES

At the Sennheiser booth, members of Team3D were on hand to (BOOM) headshot any masochistic noob who longed for a beating. After looking at my twentieth gaming chair, I decided I need some more enjoyable punishment. Maybe I could show this guy a thing or two. Despite my l33t AK skillz, I lost. By a wide margin. He threw in a couple pity kills to stop my snot-nosed sobbing, but it was pretty clear I still suck at Counter-Strike. At least I got a t-shirt I'll never wear out of it!

I'll take them on head to head in brain academy!

after I get my nuts handed to me in counterstrike.

Patent Trolls Attack Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo

Game controllers seem to be lawsuit magnets. First Immersion sues Microsoft and Sony for the use of patented rumble technology, and now a company called Fenner Investments from Texas claims that the aforementioned plus Nintendo have willfully infringed on their controller related patent.

I hate scum like this... I wish they would just get lined up against a wall and shot.

The Hottest Chun-Li in Ohio

Sure, CES is going full steam as I write this, but there were other conventions this weekend that were just as important. For instance, Ohayocon, the largest anime convention in Ohio! That's right, out of all the anime conventions in Ohio, I'm 75% sure this is the biggest one. I'm also willing to bet was the only place in Ohio this past weekend where you could find randomly hot Chun-Li cosplayer, complete with too-small thighs and authentic Asian heritage!

I thought it was a guy too...

PS3 Launch Outsells Xbox 360 Launch

Sony today announced that they have sold 1 million Playstation 3s in North America since the launch of the console six weeks ago. That makes the Playstation 3 the fastest selling home console Sony has ever launched. Microsoft sold 600,000 of their Xbox 360s from their November launch to the second week in January.

Sony is lying, salientshadow. You just have to get used to it. WTF does "sold into the retail channel" mean? Why can't they just say how many were BOUGHT? Always lying and misleading.

I don't trust their convoluted wording (I believe they are counting units that have left the factory, sitting on ships en route to N.A., etc.), because that's the kind of lie Sony always tells.

I trust http://nexgenwars.com numbers a lot more:

9,681,838 XBox360
1,045,948 PS3
3,572,195 Wii

They may have to launch in Europe early too, so that they won't be embarrassed by the surplus of unsold PS3s that occurs when they ship their 2nd million by the end of February...

Clips: Wii Sex Movie Redux

Alrighty! Several desperate emails, disgruntled commenters and much overloaded bandwidth later, we've resolved the issue of the now infamous Wii Sex video that was posted yesterday. Apparently, the link that was sent to me was not meant to go public (which the person who sent it should have known!) and we've been asked to take the link down so it doesn't continue crashing their server.

Cute piece.

I guarantee there WILL be wiimotes jammed and stuck up people's butts, in their colons. Especially because it's got a vibrate feature.

PSPers Take Over NYC Subway

The PSP Nation decided to hold their latest weekly meet-up in the bowels of New York City. The group gathered at the Manhattan Mall and then descended to the subways where they caught a ride to Coney Island. On the way the group of gamers played some hot PSP-on-PSP action. It sounds like it was a lot of fun. This sort of mass commuter game action is what I think Sony envisioned when they released the Playstation Portable. Too bad it never happens without a plan.

No kidding... "ALL" the PSP owners in NYC.

I see almost that many DS Lites on a REGULAR commute.
