CVG's Best Game Endings Ever

Following up on their list of "The Worst Game Endings Ever", Computer and Video Games has put together their picks for the best endings. The eight game list is populated with hits like Halo, Final Fantasy VII, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and my personal favorite, the dog ending from Silent Hill 2. Each entry is accompanied by a short explanation of exactly why it's so great.

Nothing compares to the ending of Mother 3. Heck, I really can't even understand Japanese, but it brought tears to my eyes.

The Epic Tale of SNES Discoloration

Vintage Computing's Benj Edwards is a man possessed. Possessed with understanding (and solving) the problem of Super Nintendo plastic discoloration, his investigation of the burning question "Was my Super Nintendo always this yellow-ish?" has yielded interesting results. I know my original SNES is looking pretty jaundiced these days, but I'm not that concerned about it.

Every single one of my systems and games still have their slick grey look, absolutely no discoloring at all.

Well, aside from Super Metroid ( I purchased it last week); which is a light, sandy brown.

GameCube Lingers On, New Shooter Announced

Spurred on by cheap development costs and the Cube's SHMUP community, O3 Entertainment have decided that "next-gen" just isn't for them, and will be releasing Milestone's (Chaos Field) Radio Allergy on the system. O3 marketing man Mike Pepe: With the prices that you can sell a GameCube title for, it's a lot more reasonable currently than going with the Wii, which of course is a lot more expensive for us to garner [titles for] and also a lot more expensive for the customer to...

Apple's Steve Jobs "Trash-Talks" PSP

So, the iPhone is coming. If you are American, soon. For those living in other countries (like me), you'll have to wait longer (like me). The phone's portable game possibilities once again stir up talk of Apple expanding further into the market. Apple honcho Steve Jobs seems to be adding his two cents as well. From Time: All technologists believe their products are better than other people's, or at least they say they do, but Jobs believes it a little more than most.

The iPhone looks great, but the price is far too high. With all the technology and crap they pack into it, I'm sure it's just barely enough for Apple to make a few dollars off each one. If they were to lose any moeny from the beginning, more than likely, they would've jacked the price up beyond $800.

I'm sure it'll drop about $100 within one year, and be down to about $300 2 years from now. I remember when the RAZR released for about $300 or more; they're now available for under $99.

Gamestop Buyout Of Rhino Official

Blockbuster Inc. issued a press release earlier today on the sale of Rhino Video Games to Gamestop Corp. making the rumored sale of the southeastern game retailer official. Financial details of the sale were not disclosed, but Blockbuster expects to close the sale by the end of January.

Great, now I can never get those awesome 2 for 1 deals on old games. Hell, now I can't even get classic games at all.

I guess I'll have to start buying games from the PX and Target...

Rumor: Gamestop Buys Rhino

The Cheap Ass Gamer forums are running wild with unconfirmed reports that specialty retailer Gamestop has welcomed a new member into the corporate family, Rhino Video Games. The chain of 70-plus retail video game stores based out of Gainesville, Florida is currently owned by Blockbuster, Inc. The original poster started the discussion with the following:I found out this afternoon that Rhino has been bought out by Gamestop. It was announced to the Store Managers this afternoon.

If this is true, it majorly sucks. Rhino is the only place in my area where I can purchase classic games, and considering I don't have much of an interest in modern games, this is a major blow to me.

Gamestop really needs to GTFO.

The Very Fake, Very Nice Looking PSPboy

Yes, this is totally random and clearly fake, but it was so well done that I thought I'd pass it on. We have little to no backstory to go on as to the origins of this piece of work, but this portable mash up is credited to a MOD SOUL. Kudos, Mr. Soul. You can check out the full sized version here if you're so inclined. Thanks for the mail, Jojje!

Just make the control pad an actual control pad, not those thumb-numbing hard buttons.

Aside from that, it looks like it would actually be pretty comfortable, and having a second analog stick would make many games much easier. (GTA in particular)

PA's Tycho Picks Zune Over iPod

So this seemingly has little to do with gaming, but bear with him for a second. This morning I was checking out Penny Arcade when I came upon Tycho's Zune confessional. Not only did he buy a Zune instead of an iPod, he actually likes it. The thing is, I'm in the same boat. I had the choice of my family gifting me with a video iPod or a Zune and I went with the Zune.

I have a 30 gig iPod video and it's perfectly fine for me. I really only have about 4 or 5 movies on it at a time and nothing else, so I still have plenty of room to spare. Anyways, I got it at around $230 (it was $300 when it was released, I got it on sale), so I have no complaints there. Once I feel it's lived its life, I can always slap on some good ol' linux for a little bit of homebrew.

The Zune to me is just...ugh.

The SNES That Never Was...

The PAL SNES looked sweet. The NTSC one...did not. But judging by these ancient magazine scans, the potential was there for it to look a whole lot better. Chris Covell, a nomad who wanders the streets of Japan in search of historical artefacts, has hit paydirt. Paydirt being an old 1988 copy of Famicom Tsushin Magazine, which contained, among other things, pictures of the prototype SNES/Super Famicom.

Strider: Am I one of the lucky few that doesn't have some miscolored SNES? Mine's still a nice light grey, no staining at all.

I don't mind that we got the "ugly" SNES, but I at least wish NOA would've given us the sweet controllers with the multicolored buttons. The two shades of purple are bland compared to the other regions' red, blue, yellow, and green.

Win One of Ten Lost Planets

Don't forget to enter our Lost Planet contest for your chance to win one of ten copies of the Xbox 360 game. You have until January 5 to construct something game-related out of ice, snow or sand, snap a pic and send it in. Hit the link for the details.

I don't know of a place around me for at least 300 miles that has snow. Heck, I don't know of a place within that distance that is even below 50 degrees. The only people I see having a chance are those in Canada, Alaska, or someone willing to make something out of playground sandbox.

lol, global warming

Now say by some chance it does happen to snow, I still don't have an Xbox 360. I'm completely screwed in this contest, so good luck to everyone else.
