Clips: Super Mario 3 Commercial

This commercial from Nintendo, circa early 90's, was used not only to promote Super Mario Bros. 3, but they figured they might as well throw the other ones on there too and really push the then quickly growing Mario franchise. I'm amazed at the fervor with which the different colored factions of Mario fans go at their chant, fists punching the air like they are at some sort of fascist political rally.

remember it like it was yesterday. why don't they have cool ads like this anymore?

8-Bit Link Is A Real Treat

We've see a lot of gaming cakes, but here are some gaming cupcakes! Little Gia is a new Zelda fan, apparently having reached a gaming epiphany with Twilight Princess. She wanted a Link cake fro her birthday, so instead of going the traditional route, mom, dad, grandma and her "crazy gaming uncles" came up with this 8-bit Link made from 143 delicious cupcakes. At 36" by 44", this might be the biggest game related dessert treat we've seen.

oh how I love everything 8-bit...

Cake Mania On The DS

Majesco keeps the cooking games rolling out with the upcoming baking extravaganza, Cake Mania. Based on the PC and online game of the same name by Sandlot Games, Cake Mania turns you in to the proprietor of a busy bakery where you must bake and decorate cakes for your ever increasing number of picky customers. The puzzler will be coming out on the DS later this year, along with it's sequel.

it's you, guy. obviously you haven't tried the new Castlevania and FF3. both are pretty hardcore.

NPD: Mario, Madden Top Software List

The Playstation 2's Madden NFL 07 was the top selling video game of 2006, by a wide margin. Next up was New Super Mario Bros for the DS followed by ube-shooter Gears of War. Hit the jump for the full list as well as the top games for December and top titles across all platforms for December.

They sold MORE GCN versions than Wii? But I can't find the GCN version anywhere!

Women's Health Suggests Couple's Gaming

If you're a guy and have a girlfriend who you're trying to get into gaming, I'd highly recommend picking up a copy of the January/February Women's Health magazine. Inside you'll find an article entitled "Grab the Joystick: Toy with your man in the virtual world", which you can leave sitting around somewhere (not the bathroom, that's our place) where she'll find it. The message couldn't be any clearer."

> Women love psychologists

ain't that the truth... seems like they are the only people they can trust too.

anyway, my girlfriend and I just had a 40 hours marathon through Kingdom Hearts II, that was a lot of fun.

Rumor: Tingle RPG Bound For Europe?

Keep in mind that this is all rumour and speculation, but word has slipped that Tingle's RPG might be heading to Western shores in 2007. As in, Western Europe. There's nothing on an American release, so either that's just implied or...maybe it's felt that a more liberal Europe might be more receptive to Tingles unique "outlook on life". If you catch my drift. Luke Plunkett Tingle's RPG Heading to Europe!

Awesome, I was just thinking about this game yesterday and how it slipped under the radar recently. I'm glad to hear about this rumor and will definitely import this if there's an English translation, hell even French.

Strange Japanese Game Center Name

Somewhere in Japan lurks an arcade with the moniker "Game Imigurande." Not only "Game Imigurande," but also "Immigrant" with a question mark. With Japan's declining population, this arcade ends up unintentionally political, and yet, strangely poetic. Brian Ashcraft Non-Japanese Needed?

"With Japan's declining population"

first time I hear about this. explain? sources?

Clips: Another Thing To Play Tetris On

Finally, one more thing on which Tetris can be played. This time, it's a Chip & PIN terminal, modded to play a rather simple version of Alexey Pazhitnov's puzzle game. You can read just a bit more about the not-so-secure payment device turned dedicated game console at Light Blue Touchpaper.

This Day in Gaming, December 24th

1999: Hudson releases Robopon 64 for N64 in Japan. I know little to nothing about the game, but from screenshots it looks like a Pokemon-esque robot fighting game. I guess it's time to bust out the old emulators. 2004: Sega releases Puyo Puyo Pop Fever for PSP and DS in the US. No matter how advanced portable technology becomes, people will always want falling brick games on the go.

The only thing I know about Puyo Pop Fever was that it was featured in an episode of Genshiken.

Weird! You're geeky enough to have watched Genshiken, but not much of a geek to never have played Puyo Pop Fever...

The Space Invaders Long Board

All the way from Italy, Kotakuite Fabio, (no not that Fabio) sends in this picture of his long board custom painted by a friend with a Space Invaders theme. Says Fabio: It really satisfies the inner geek of my skater: or the inner skater of my geek! While perhaps not the slickest of most technically perfect rendition, it's awesome in that home-made-punk-rock-skateboard way. Hell of a lot better than those crap overdone jobs you get at Toys "R" Us.
