PS3 Dev Secrets Coming to GDC

In the first of what will likely be many interesting previews of things to come at this year's Game Developers Conference, executive director Jamil Moledina announces that there will be two different talks during the conference about squeezing the most out of the Playstation 3 during development.

Maybe they'll explain why its worth the extra hassle to develop for.

Or what use the 7 dsps are when apparently they're only good at floating point arrithmatic, which apparently is only a small percentage of game code.

I am of course taking this information from other articles, so argue with those articles, not me, I don't care enough.

The Very Fake, Very Nice Looking PSPboy

Yes, this is totally random and clearly fake, but it was so well done that I thought I'd pass it on. We have little to no backstory to go on as to the origins of this piece of work, but this portable mash up is credited to a MOD SOUL. Kudos, Mr. Soul. You can check out the full sized version here if you're so inclined. Thanks for the mail, Jojje!

When will people, sony included, realise their dpad is absolutely atrocious.

that is all.

This Day in Gaming, 2007 Predictions

2007: Two questions for you, dearest readers. 1. What will it bring...price drops, new hardware, failure or success of the next gen multimedia downloads? 2. What are you most looking forward to...games, finally affording hardware, flaming Sony? 3. What were you most surprised by in '06...gaming related, please - I don't want to hear about your explorations with puberty (though I couldn't be more proud).

I predict:

That after the release of 3 I will still not like halo.

The PS3 will have another delay in europe.

The wii will have a price drop, towards the end of the year probably.

A version of the 360 with the hd dvd built in will be confirmed, i know it was rumoured already.

The wii will be the best selling system, second to the DS.

I look forward to:

Mario galaxy
Crackdown
Bioshock
Smash bros brawl
Saints row 2 (hopefully as bug filled as the first, the bugs are what made that game)
Overlord

And probably more that i cant remember.

And apart from the wii there wasnt any surprises really.

23C3: Console Hacking 2006

Julian from SelectParks was at the recent 23rd Chaos Communication Congress leet haxor conf in Berlin, where Felix Domke presented his "Console Hacking 2006" talk. Julian, bless'im, took copious notes. What's 23C3? 23C3 was more a hackers mecca than an ethically pointed security conference; a festival celebrating media and technology reclamation where the right to repurpose and dissect technology is considered inseparable from the right to learn from it. Amen to that.

The 360 was upside down but if you watch he flips it the right way up, so it could have been running a disc.

It could also have been some modified shaders, since the shaders on king kong are not protected, which could make it fake, or could mean he found an exploit in the shaders that others havent.

Really we just need to know what the piece of pcb is connected to, and what hes doing on that laptop.

Damn hackers and their secretive ways!

I watched the 360 'hack' last night, and all I could think is, this could so easily just be a dvd playing that hes created, burnt and put in the drive. Saying that, there was something attached to the console where the hdd would usually be, some pcb. I'd like to have seen what he was doing on the laptop, the girl next to him must've been able to see.

Hmm, I don't know, this would be great if its true, but he could have easily faked what he showed at the conference.

Fingers crossed though!

This Day in Gaming, December 31st

1991: Hi Tech Expressions releases Barbie for the NES in the US. This is also the night that your NES cried itself to sleep for the first time. 1994: Human Entertainment releases Tae Kwon Do for the SNES in the US. Writing this makes me crave a good 2D brawler to waste the weekend away. Is Xbox Live still brawlerless? 2006: Has this been an incredible year to be a gamer or what?

Favourite gaming moment, my first match of tennis on wii sports, having gone to a midnight launch for the first time, and getting a wii no problem, while people in line before me got sent away because their names wern't on the list.

But yes, that first play on the wii is by far my favourite gaming moment from 2006. Although I've had some great 360 moments too.

Bioshock Headed To The PS3 ...No, It's Not ...Yes, It Is!

UPDATE: This turned out to be an old scan. Read about it here. The folks at 2k Games just can't make up their minds whether their new hybrid first person shooter, Bioshock, will be coming out for the PS3. When first announced, the title was set to be released on PC, Xbox 360 and PS3. Then at the X06 event back in September, Microsoft stated that, in fact, Bioshock would not be released for the PS3, but would be a PC/Xbox 360 exclusive. Now it seems they've changed their minds yet again.

One game is not enough, but an entire library of exclusives is. Nintendo could have absolutely no third party support what so ever and I'd still buy their console because their games are always fantastic and you're just not going to get them on any other console.

That being said, I do want this boishock which is why its a good thing I have a 360 - which I'll admit I did buy for only a couple of games, kameo and crackdown - which isnt even out yet but it was the first game I ever heard of for the 360. But luckily the 360 has other awesome games so it wasn't a console purchased solely for those two games.

I think between the wii and the 360 I'll have all the games I need, exclusives or not.

New Dragon Quest Swords Screens

Along with the news that the next Dragon Quest title will be made for the DS, comes the news that the franchise's first next-gen title, DRAGON QUEST SWORDS: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors, will be developed for the Wii. Executive Producer, Yuu Miyake, feels the Wii is a perfect partner for Dragon Quest: We believe (Dragon Quest's) appeal lies in simplicity that anyone can enjoy, and the excitement of becoming a hero in an epic adventure.

If I see one more site with fucking javascript pop up images I'm going to try and punch it in the face, breaking my screen and hand in the process. I mean come on, there is no fucking excuse for it other than pissing off people who like to middle click.

Capcom Goes Hollywood

Following the success of the two released Resident Evil films and a new Street Fighter flick featuring Chun Li in the works, Capcom is looking to its other franchises to expand its presence in Hollywood. The Hollywood Reporter talked to new senior VP of licensing Germaine Gioia about where Capcom will look to expand on its movie licensing.

I was also going to make a comment questioning the success of the resident evil films, while the first was barely watchable and an acceptable way to spend an hour and half aslong as you didn't pay for it, the second one was a giant walking cliche and a terrible way to waste an hour and a half.

The first street fighter film was also abysmal, and I have no doubt this second one will be too.

While I don't like the devil may cry games, it could well make a good film provided they get somebody good to make it, and we're running terribly low on these people at the moment. So I'm going to say if it does get film-ized Its not going to be very good, but it stands a reasonable chance of being less shit than other video game movies.
