The Wiire: Be Careful Tonight

by Rob Galbreath (2006-11-18)

According to various news outlets across the globe, lines for PlayStation 3 resulted in life-threatening situations that require a great deal of caution for Wii lines in North America tonight.

- In Ohio, two armed gunmen robbed five PlayStation 3 consoles from an EB Games store. Police said they plan to patrol local stores for the Wii launch.

- In New York, a Henrietta thief shattered Best Buy's glass doors with 32 PlayStation 3 consoles stolen.

- In Connecticut, two armed men held up a line of 15 to 20 demanding money. Police said one of the men shot a customer when he refused to meet his demands.

- In California, two people were arrested after a crowd trampled one another in a parking lot.

- In Massachussetts, a gunman shot a man in the chest and shoulder. The assailants are still unknown at the time of publish.

Due to the extreme nature of these assaults, The Wiire staff strongly encourages all of our readers to please take caution when picking up your preorders. While many stores are planning to open at midnight for the launch of the Wii, some stores are not very well lit or protected.

The Wiire encourages those seeking a console to bring people along with you to ensure you are not alone when waiting in line. Check to see that you have necessary supplies for your environment and area, including umbrellas and any other items helpful during the wait. If you have a chain wallet, ensure that your money is securely held with you at all times in the case of pickpockets.

While a portable game system or MP3 player may seem to be a wise decision, do not bring anything you would not want stolen. Thieves are aware that you have money with you for the consoles, so keep any valuable items with you at all times. If you are concerned for your store's location, contact your local police to ensure a safe wait.

Cash payments are not advised, as credit and ATM cards are easier to track if stolen.  Remember to write down your card's identification number as well as the toll-free number on the back of your card(s).  For more information on credit card theft, visit the Federal Trade Commission's site here.

The Wiire wishes everyone a safe and exciting wait for the long-anticipated Wii. Please take all necessary precautions, and good luck.
