Jack Thompson Gets It Wrong, Again

Home : News : News Story

The anti-game lawyer is now demanding Midway stop distributing Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, but not because he thinks it is too violent...

Like countless other games before it, Midway's latest game in the legendary Mortal Kombat series allows gamers to create custom characters. One gamer created a character wearing a suit, with a red tie and white hair, posting the formula for how to create the character online for others to read. The character is intended to look vaguely similar to Jack Thompson, although strictly speaking it could be any man with white hair, wearing a suit. The site reads:

"Jack Thompson is the most violent man in America, ergo, he is a perfect fit for Mortal Kombat. Don't believe me? Check out any one of Jack's recent tirades both before and after his Contempt charges in Florida the other day. The man was ready to massacre that judge. And with the recent release of Bully, he's gone and added flaming homophobia to his list of virtues. When it comes to kombatants, Jack is truly in a class by himself."

This character looked vaguely similar to Jack Thompson, and while most people would consider it an honor, it seems Jack didn't take it too well when he found out such a thing was possible in a video game. Jack sent the following request to Midway:

“It has today come to my attention that the newly recently Mortal Kombat: Armageddon contains an unauthorized commercial exploitation of my name, photograph, image, and likeness within the game.” “You are commanded to cease and desist immediately [emphasis Thompson’s] from the distribution of this game because of this unauthorized, illegal content…”

By Jack's logic ANY game that allows for character customization should be halted, because someone might make a character that looks like him. What's scary is that this man wishes to become a judge himself.

One has to wonder, is Jack Thompson serious, or just seeking some level of fame and publicity?
