Aberdeenshire Council's head of education is understood to have received a five-figure settlement after leaving after 16 months in the job.
Sohail Faruqi is reported to have received a financial settlement running to tens of thousands of pounds.
He was appointed director of education and recreation in June last year.
Aberdeenshire Council said he had decided to stand down for personal and family reasons and this had been agreed by mutual consent with the authority.
Mr Faruqi succeeded Hamish Vernal, who had been head of the service with both Aberdeenshire and the former Grampian councils.
