Slovakia hammering hurts Bellamy
Wales captain Craig Bellamy
Bellamy must pick his side up before Cyprus on Wednesday
Wales' new captain Craig Bellamy said the 1-5 Millennium Stadium loss to Slovakia was a "disastrous" experience that he would rather not look back at.

"We've a few days to lift ourselves for Cyprus, we have to do that quickly," said Bellamy, who also faces an assault trial in Cardiff starting on Tuesday.

"We've always lacked depth as a small nation, but a lot of players out there aren't getting regular club games.

"You could see that, it's a hard ask to step up to international football."

The Euro 2008 qualifying loss was Wales' worst defeat since 1996 and their worst home result since 1908.

Wales manager John Toshack shows his frustration against Slovakia
It's just as well we have another game on Wednesday, I wouldn't want to go for a long time on the back of that

Wales manager John Toshack

Manager John Toshack had been forced to contend with an inexperienced squad, a fact intensified by a long injury list, and he felt that the result did not justify the efforts of his team.

"They looked a lot better than they are and we looked a lot worse," Toshack told BBC Sport Wales.

"We started brightly, moved the ball well, and Slovakia looked apprehensive, but there was no end product.

"We were sleeping for the first goal and the second was a bad mistake - that was enough to knock the stuffing out of anyone.

"Gareth Bale got one back, but the third and fourth goals were very poor - you can't afford to do that at this level.

"I know where the problems are. We had only two people out there who are playing in the Premiership and no outfield men over the age of 30.

"But it was a poor result. It's just as well we have another game on Wednesday, I wouldn't want to go for a long time on the back of that."

Paul knows that he could have done better on at least two of the goals

John Toshack on Paul Jones

Wales' goalkeeper Paul Jones had a nightmare game on his 50th cap, but Toshack refused to be too harsh on his 39-year-old veteran.

"Paul's experienced enough to know that he could have done better on at least two of the goals," said Toshack.

"But he's the sort of character who you don't have to tell that sort of thing to."

Toshack confirmed that he will call John Hartson as planned on Sunday to discuss his fitness and a possible call-up for Cyprus.

"John is the only one who has rung me to say he wants to come out of retirement," said the Wales boss.

"There have been rumours about Gary Speed but I have not heard from him."

Slovakia coach Dusan Galis was delighted with a performance "without mistakes".

"I am satisfied with the result and with our performance, I believe this will help us before the game against Germany at home," said Galis.

"I was surprised it was so easy, but then Wales were depleted and they did not have Ryan Giggs - these things make a difference."
