Search the Illinois crime database
Published September 4, 2005
Find out about crime in your community with this searchable database, based on statistics released by the Illinois State Police.
Pick a community and click "Search" to get data on violent crimes and property crimes tracked by the state for 2004 and 2003. Choose a county for a list of communities, ranked from lowest to highest crime rate.
Note: The search does not produce exact matches; a "Chicago" search will include Chicago Heights, Chicago Ridge, etc.
The results include the crime rate per 1,000 residents, based on U.S. Census estimates for each community. This calculation can overstate crime in communities with small populations but large business districts.
The crimes counted in this analysis are murder, forcible rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, theft, motor-vehicle theft and arson. Definitions are based on the Federal Bureau of Investigation's uniform crime reporting system.
The community search shows incidence of each of these crimes, along with its percentage rise or fall from the previous year. The county search ranks communities based on the overall crime rate.
In communities such as Naperville that cross county lines, crime statistics are tablulated separately for the portion in each county.
