SOLUTIONS FOR BROADCAST

Television broadcasters throughout the world are in a period of significant change - both in technology and business models.

For each broadcast facility, the transition is different. Some may be upgrading from an analog to digital infrastructure. Others are converting to in-house high-definition production, while some are expanding to the multichannel distribution of new program services. A few pioneers - appreciating the extraordinary workflow advantages of IT technology - are migrating to a file-based infrastructure.

Making the right move at the right time is a daunting challenge for any broadcaster. Some have been caught off guard by popular trends, such as the exploding popularity of HDTV with American consumers. This has jolted local stations with the realization that it's not enough to simply pass through the HD signals of their networks. A new group of quality conscious viewers are demanding local HD programming and challenging their favorite stations to provide it.

For a company founded on the fundamental premise that television image quality matters, we at Snell & Wilcox have learned that broadcasters offering the best picture and sound quality are the most successful in the industry. Most of these leaders also just happen to be our best customers.

In fact, since our first broadcast HD product was introduced in 1988, we've been planning for this revolution. Our current HD product line leads the industry in quality, flexibility and value. Yet, we recognize that technological change waits on no one. That's why we are working aggressively to lead the next revolution-the era of file-based television.

Along the way we've learned that television technology is always in a continuing, dynamic transition. It will improve, adapt and be refined to accommodate those who create the compelling new programs and services that viewers crave. Those broadcasters who work most successfully with television technology manage this continuous change in an intelligent, measured and cost-effective way.

We believe the way to effectively manage change is through a "smart" infrastructure that allows management to plan and deploy a facility in a way that's harmonious with the goals of the broadcaster's business model. That's why each product in our broadcast product range is "self-aware"-plug it into our monitoring and control network and it's easily configured in seconds. We call that "integrated intelligence." You'll call it a lifesaver!

The bottom line: Snell & Wilcox's broadcast infrastructure products-including switchers and keyers, modular components, management and control systems, signal processing, and converters - offer the most advanced technologies at the lowest possible cost. That value proposition works on any level, from the largest broadcast network facility to the smallest portable video "flight-pack" for remote live production.

CASE STUDIES

Snell & Wilcox's powerful range of broadcast infrastructure products can be used as smart "building blocks" to construct any form or size of video operation. The only limits are the human imagination.

In fact, our "intelligent" system of application-specific products is so flexible that the world's three largest modular broadcast production facilities chose Snell & Wilcox equipment over that of any of our competitors.

Turner Broadcasting now has over 9,000 IQ modules serving more than 20 networks; DirecTV operates 2,500 S&W components; and TVB in Hong Kong has deployed over 2,000 of our products. All three operations use S&W's advanced, field-proven RollCall and RollMap networked software control and monitoring solutions. All three sites have had a remarkable record of reliability.

And, like all television facilities, these major operators are in a constant state of change. Turner, the world's largest broadcast system with integrated monitoring and infrastructure capabilities, recently upgraded its existing standard definition system to condition and process high-definition signals.

The benefits from a smart modular infrastructure extend equally to smaller broadcast stations. For example, KPLC-TV in Lake Charles, Louisiana, the 177th U.S. television market, and KAIT-TV in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the 179th size market, enjoy the benefits of IQ Modules as members of the 15 station group owned by Liberty Broadcasting.
