This was a version of step-by-step modernisation of the
T-54 tank.
The T-55 differed from the T-54 by installation of nuclear protection, enlarged
allowance of ammunition and increased engine output.
The T-55 was developed by the design bureau of the Uralvagonzavod Plant in Nizhnyi Tagil. The Kharkiv
Machine Building Design Bureau provided designer support to the series production of the tank at the Malyshev Plant
and participated in improvement of the vehicle.
