New-style CD singles will be cheaper
Updated 30 September 2003, 07.40
New-style CDs will make music cheaper
New cheap CD singles with only two tracks will be in shops next year to try and give the singles chart a big boost.

They'll sit alongside the current style of singles - to be re-named maxi-singles - on the shelves from 1 January 2004.

Downloaded tracks are also going to start being counted, as record bosses try to make the charts more popular.

The number of singles being bought has been falling for years, and it's hoped by including downloads and the new-style singles the chart will get bigger again.

The two-track CDs will have an A and a B side, run for less than 10 minutes in total, and offer no free gifts.

The older maxi singles can have three tracks, plus remixes too, but must run for less than 20 minutes.

Including downloads is difficult at the moment because it's hard to make sure sales figures are accurate, but chart bosses still think it's important to include them.
