DEVIL RAYS 4, YANKEES 2
Left stranded with mound of gifts
BY JIM BAUMBACH
It was as if the Yankees were stuck playing the runners-left-on-base edition of "Can you top this?" last night against the Devil Rays. Every inning they seemingly found a new way to leave men on en route to a 4-2, 10-inning loss that left everyone aggravated.

No excuses from Rivera
BY BOB HERZOG
He could have easily played the rust card, claiming he wasn't sharp because circumstances haven't allowed him to get regular work. But alibis have never been Mariano Rivera's modus operandi, and last night was no exception.

NOTEBOOK
Giambi resistant to DH role
BY JIM BAUMBACH
Even though Jason Giambi yesterday was coming off two successful games as the designated hitter, his opinion of the position hasn't changed. He still prefers to play first base.

Patrick newest player in ongoing GM search
BY ALAN HAHN
While the Rangers and Devils are in the midst of their first-round playoff series, the Islanders are still searching for a general manager. Dean Lombardi, one of the most experienced available candidates, was crossed off the list when he was hired by the Los Angeles Kings last week. But another, two-time Stanley Cup winner Craig Patrick, was made available when the Pittsburgh Penguins announced his contract would not be extended after this season.

Pay no mind games
BY BARBARA BARKER
Listening to Jermaine O'Neal, you would think the Nets made a sudden roster switch before the first round of the playoffs. The way O'Neal has been complaining about the Nets defense, one would think he had Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino covering him, not Jason Collins and Cliff Robinson.

Rumors everywhere
BY KEN BERGER
When the Jets' Mike Tannenbaum was asked recently if he'd spoken with any other general managers about potential draft-day trades, the first-year GM came back with a coy response.

Favre, 36, decides not to pack it in
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Green Bay Packers haven't reeled in any big-time free agents, but that didn't prevent them from pulling off their biggest offseason move of all: Convincing Brett Favre to return.

METS NOTEBOOK
Wright's rough day
BY DAVID LENNON
David Wright looked inconsolable in the ninth inning yesterday as pandemonium erupted at AT&T Park. It was because of his throwing error that Barry Bonds finally made his way to the plate as a pinch hitter, and after Bonds delivered the tying home run, Wright hung his head as the crowd of 34,454 screamed in unison.

Rotation will be altered slightly
BY DAVID LENNON
The Mets already planned to alter their rotation before yesterday's 7-5 win over the Giants, but after seeing Brian Bannister limp home in the sixth inning while running the bases, some further adjustments may be necessary.

BCS LOWERS BAR FOR AT-LARGE QUALIFIERS. The Bowl Championship Series yesterday lowered the bar for at-large qualifiers. Instead of having to finish in the top 12 of the final BCS standings, teams finishing in the top 14 will now be eligible for one of the lucrative postseason berths. The change reflects the addition of a fifth BCS bowl, which means there will be 10 BCS slots instead of eight next season. Any Division I-A team is eligible for at-large consideration.

It was just the second game of a three-game series between the Smithtown West baseball team and West Islip, but not to Al Nucci. The Smithtown West coach said it was a must-win game after his team scored just one run in a Game 1 loss on Tuesday that snapped a nine-game winning streak.
