Blockhouse No. 1 was built in 1812 to defend the cliff of the park. It is located in the northwest portion of the park on a hill called "The Cliff." Blockhouse No. 1 is the oldest building in the park. The American flag flies at half-staff for the victims of the American Embassy terrorist bombing in Nairobi, Kenya, of August 9, 1998.
