Officer Entry

Age

16-40 (45 for ex-RN Officers) on date of Admiralty Interview Board. Normal Retirement Age is 55 (60 for medical officers)

  • Academic - A UK degree and 2 GCSE at Grade C or above in Mathematics and English.

    or

  • 5 non-overlapping GCSE (Grade C) or above plus 2 'A' levels (Grade E or above). GCSE subjects must include Mathematics and English.
    or

  • A nautical, technical, professional or business qualification which is of relevance to the particular Branch/Specialisation for which entry is sought.

Commission

All RNR Officers join on a continuous commission to the age 55 (60 for Medical Officers). Service will be reviewed at Service Review points when they are within 15 months of completing 16 years' service or age 50, whichever is earlier. For medical officers their service will be reviewed at 55.

Former Commissioned Officers of the British Army, Royal Air Force, Commonwealth Armed Forces and their Reserves

Former commissioned officers of the British Army, Royal Air Force, Commonwealth Armed Forces and their Reserves, may be considered for entry in an appropriate equivalent rank subject to whether previous professional training and experience is relevant to the RNR. Scrutiny of former Service records (including confidential reports) will determine whether attendance at the Admiralty Interview Board will be necessary.

Former Commissioned Officers of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, QARNNS and RNR

Former Commissioned Officers of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, QARNNS and RNR may be considered for entry at the same rank, with adjusted seniority, subject to scrutiny of Service records. Ideally, no more than 5 years should have elapsed since leaving the Service.

Serving and former URNU Officers

Officers who have completed a minimum of 6 months' satisfactory service in a University Royal Naval Unit or who apply to join the RNR within 12 months of leaving the URNU, may be considered for direct entry as an officer, subject to successful completion of the Admiralty Interview Board.
