Damning surveillance footage was brought into evidence in the case against four Northdale residents in the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday.

Rubenthran Govensamy, 20, Ramouthar Omar, 33, Andrew Manmohan, 19, and Bongani Dlamini, 29, are on trial for the murder of Anthony Werner in Old Greytown Road on March 7, 2004.

The four have pleaded not guilty.

However, CCTV slide footage was introduced to the court on Thursday, obtained from cameras installed in the Northdale CBD.

The footage clearly shows Govensamy, Omar, Manmohan and Dlamini chasing Werner. It also revealed that the four then kicked, slapped and stabbed Werner to death before driving off, leaving his body on the side of the road.

The State alleges that all four accused, as well as Werner and his group of friends, were all at the Axle Night club in Greytown Road on the night of March 6, 2004.

During the evening Werner had an argument with the accused after which insults and vulgarities were hurled between them.

In the early hours of March 7, as the club was about to close, Govensamy, Omar, Manmohan and Dlamini left the club before Werner.
The State alleges that the group then armed themselves with a knife and a broken bottle and waited for Werner to leave the club.

When they saw Werner leave, the four men chased and attacked him. Werner died at the scene.

The case is proceeding.
