New Quake 4 Linux 1.1 Patch
15:30 | by Jube
Timothee Besset has updated his .plan with news of a new Linux installer for the Quake 4 v1.1 Beta Patch. He also adds the following notes regarding the Linux version of the patch:

A few things while I'm here:

  • We are seeing reports of problems connecting to servers because pak013.pk4 is missing. That's the QuakeMas maps, which you can get from our ftp [1] and mirrors. The final installer for 1.1 will bundle QuakeMas maps and several new maps so that will go away.

  • The Linux client does not support SMP or VoiceChat at this point.

  • The SMP code in Quake 4 takes advantage of multiple cores for rendering purposes only. It will not affect dedicated server performance at all. It will not send both of your CPUs to 100% usage either.

Quake 4 Interview with Raven
14:55 | by Jube
GotFrag's got their minds on Quake 4 in their new interview with Eric Biessman of Raven Software. GF seemed to have the average Joe in mind when they asked their questions, as they bring up topics not seen in Q4 interviews before; such as bots, Q4TV, frames per second, the CPL and more. Here's a little snippet:

How did you beta test QUAKE 4?

Activision (the distributor for QUAKE 4) has a large Quality Assurance division and they beat the heck out of the game. We also had countless hours of our own time playing and playing the game and looking for issues (both balance and bug issues as well as a good “fun” pass.) Lastly, we had a (very) small private beta for the multiplayer side of things to check out how the game would run for the average user at home.

Half-Life 2: Episode 2 in the Works
14:55 | by Willow
In a recent interview by CVG with Valve Software's Robin Walker, it was revealed that production on Half-Life 2: Episode 2 has begun.
Valve's Robin Walker, designer/engineer on Episode 1, informed us that Episode 2 "has been in development for some time" in an interview that'll be winging its way to you shortly. Although he didn't elaborate further, it sounds as though Episode 2 may appear sooner than we could have hoped. We're definitely keeping trigger fingers crossed on that one, especially as the developer has aimed to offer "between 4 to 6 hours" of gameplay time with Episode 1, according to Walker - shorter, perhaps, than fans might have expected.
More great news for players who are eager to carry on the Half-Life 2 storyline. Be sure to check out the article for a few teaser's about Episode 1's storyline.

Red Orchestra Interview
14:53 | by redef
A quick interview with Tripwire Interactive’s Ingmar Spit has been posted at UnrealFans.com. Their interview, as you would have no doubt already assumed, concerns Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45. Here’s an excerpt:
Q. How did RO stick around? I mean we see so many WW2 mods claiming they are so much better than every one else and claim to be so different but and up dying because everyone already has a favorite?

A. Red Orchestra is more sim oriented then most currently available WW2 games. This approach already made for a very different game play experience in the MOD, on which we vastly expand in the retail game. Playing RO is just 'different' and, in my eyes, a next step in WW2 FPS mainstream gaming. People who are open to new experiences will have a good time switching over to RO.

Quake 4 Patch v1.1 Beta Patch Released
14:52 | by Jube
Quake 4 Patch v1.1 Beta Patch is now available for download at FilePlanet. The beta update weighs in at 59MB and includes a number of much anticipated game changes and fixes. According to patch notes, once they are satisfied with the beta update, a final point release will be available which will include four new multiplayer maps! Here are some notes on compatibility, 1.1 SDK and specific changes found in Quake 4 1.1 Beta.

This is the BETA of our broad QUAKE 4 update. It fixes issues and adds gameplay elements throughout both single and multiplayer including voice chat in multiplayer, a forecemodel option, a one-minute warning for tournament matches, fixed pure server autodownloading, Hyper-Threading Technology support, smooth stairjumping and a ton of multiplayer specific fixes which have been requested by the community and discovered during our own gameplay. In short, multiplayer is fixed. ;) For a complete list of new features, fixes, and changes, please see the ReadMe file.

This update will bring any previous version of the game completely up to date, however it will affect pure server and protocol consistency. Therefore, players who update to 1.1 BETA will only be able to play multiplayer against other 1.1 BETA users, and save games created on previous versions of the game will not be compatible with the 1.1 BETA update. Please use the form at www.idsoftware.com/bugs/ to report any issues you find with the 1.1 BETA update.

Once we are satisfied the 1.1 BETA is completely solid, we will release the FINAL 1.1 update. This will be a required update and will be available through the Update option in the game. With that release, we'll also be including 4 all-new multiplayer maps in addition to the QUAKEMAS map pack (3 maps) that was released in December.

We are currently working with the mod team community to deliver the 1.1 SDK and bring their mods current as soon as possible. Lastly, stay tuned in the coming months for additional free game content including new maps and gametypes.

Eight Simple Ways to Screw Up UT2007
11:11 | by redef
The folks over at BeyondUnreal have published an article entitled Eight Simple Ways to Screw Up UT2007. As the title suggests, it details eight different aspects that they think could ruin UT2007 for a hardcore fan. Here’s part of number three:
3 - Pee Ess Three

The plan was simple - two shooter franchises - Unreal Tournament for the PC, Unreal Championship for the consoles.

Now, we have nothing against consoles, much less the PS3 (which if we are to believe Sony comes with its own personal jetpack, allows you to lose weight while playing and doubles the size of your penis). However, after the hideous abortion that was Unreal Championship 1, you'll forgive us for being a tad worried to hear that UT2007 will be coming to the Sony's next-gen box of tricks as well as the PC.

In order for UT2007 to be done right, it needs to be first and foremost a PC title. Hopefully Epic won't lose sight of this while developing UT2007 for PS3 alongside the PC version.

Will the Halo movie be a bust?
10:00 | by Rams
According to the director of such tremendous video game based films as Alone in the Dark, House of the Dead, and BloodRayne it will.

In an interview Uwe Boll told Eurogamer:
"A lot of videogame companies are wrong in how they support videogame-based movies, because they get a fee for the licence and then don't do anything to promote the movie."

"They don't do videogame tie-ins, they don't do cross promotions... They count on the fact that the movie will support the game sales, but they're not willing to spend any money in cross-promoting anything. This is not healthy."

"The reality is that a lot of the videogame companies are quite sloppy - they are happy to sell the licence, but then they don't give a sh** about it, and this is not the right approach."

"I personally think that with the budget they've planned, Halo will be a failure. I think Halo will not make the money back in the end."
It's amazing that a man who makes movies purely for the profits, funding a movie is a tax right off in Germany, has the nerve to say anything about the industry. Halo may not be a great movie but it will be a hell of a lot better without Uwe's involvement.

If your looking for some upcoming movies to avoid visit Uwe's section of the IMDB. Far Cry? Hunter: The Reckoning? Why do people keep hiring this guy?

Insurgency Exclusive Media
09:56 | by Chief-Phillips
Yesterday, Insurgency unveiled their new and improved website to the world, along with a flood of media to keep anxious fans from inciting riots in the street. As if that all wasn't enough, Project Director Andrew "Argyll" Spearin sent me three new exclusives for us here at Planet Half-Life to stand in awe about. So, without further ado:

As you can see, the Insurgency team is booming along, and I can give you my personal guarantee that the finished product will surpass all of your expectations you currently have. To jump on board of their booming community, head over to their forums, and for those of you who use IRC, you can find them at #insurgency on the GameSurge Network (same place as #phl.. hint hint...). Juicy Insurgency Update
09:47 | by Chief-Phillips
The Modern infantry combat modification Insurgency, which has made a tremendous splash in the Half-Life 2 community, has completely redone their website, and released a wave of in-game media, which before was kept under wraps. The general public finally gets a view into the high-quality levels of ins_baghdad, ins_ramadi, and ins_karkar (my personal favourite, being a beta tester myself). Here's just a few teasers:

You can expect to see more great in-game goodies from Insurgency right here on Planet Half-Life. In the meantime, you can check out their newly designed website right here.

id Software Releases GtkRadiant Source Code Under GPL
09:31 | by Jube
On the Radiant site, TTimo has announced that id Software is now placing GtkRadiant and q3map2 under GPL license. They are also providing in this release a number of Quake II tools that never made it under GPL when they packaged the Quake II source code.

GtkRadiant is the heavily modified version of QERadiant and Q3Radiant (id's level editors used during Quake II and Quake III Arena development). It runs on Microsoft Windows platforms, GNU/Linux, MacOS X, and supports level editing for many id technology games.
A tarball of the initial release is now available for download and their development website now holds a subversion repository with the GPL code. Read all about it at Radiant!
