Barely two weeks after winning the Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon with Martin Dreyer, former world marathon champion Hank McGregor has declared his intention to win this Saturday's Stihl Non-stop Dusi under his own steam.
"I've entered the race for a couple of reasons," said the superfit paddler.
"Firstly because of the good prize money on offer, and also because somebody who knows me well bet me I would not be able to complete the race on my own."
McGregor said he was "all fired up and raring to go" and has thrown down the gauntlet to all competitors in this year's 10th Non-Stop Dusi, including the K2 teams.
He was 'all fired up and raring to go' | "It's the first time they have invited single paddlers to enter the race," said McGregor, who is sponsored by San Aqua Rooibos Iced and Kia Motors.
"Having just won the Dusi, my fitness level is absolutely superb although this race comes so close to the Dusi. I'm in top form and hungry for another victory.
"I'm eager to win the event outright by beating all competitors, K1 and K2.
"I know it's going to be tough, but mentally and physically I am ready and excited about the prospect."
McGregor will be paddling in a Kayak Centre Mustang K1 and will be seconded by his father Lee, himself a former Springbok paddler, surf lifesaver, water polo player and swimmer. Among the top K2 entries is the all-black team of Loveday Zondi and Thomas Ngidi, looking to write their names into the record book.
