Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix ::.

In this section, we will discuss and explain the mystery behind Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix. Most Kingdom Hearts fans have heard of it, but few know what it is. Hopefully, this section will help clear up any previous confusion about this game, and if not feel free to contact Voodoo.

What Is Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix?

Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix is the special extended edition of Kingdom Hearts that is exclusive to Japanese players only. It includes new and improved textures, the "Simple and Clean" theme song, English voice acting with Japanese subtitles, additional bosses and enemies, and new weapons and magic skills.

How come US and UK players can't get it? Can I get an imported copy from Japan?

You can get an imported copy, but it will be all in Japanese. Plus, if you managed to get an imported copy from Japan, you have to have a Japanese Sony PlayStation 2 to play it as the US and UK PlayStation 2 consoles have different DVD-encoded regions and formats, meaning Japanese-import games won't play on them. SquareSoft didn't release the Final Mix version to the US and UK because the original Japanese Kingdom Hearts didn't have some of the great features that the US version did. Therefore, SquareSoft felt they should make up for this to the Japanese players only.

What are these new features that Square added?

Here are the new features in Final Mix. Some are spoilers in invisible text, so to see them you will have to highlight the text area.
  • New Bosses, including the US-only bosses like Sephiroth and Phantom. Plus, you will get to fight one of the cloaked figures seen in the Kingdom Hearts II screenshots.
  • New Heartless, such as the Neo Shadow, who are much like a Shadow Heartless but with a longer reach. They can also be seen in the Kingdom Hearts Secret Trailer and Kingdom Hearts II screenshots.
  • Extended Plot, including a cut-scene between Cloud and Sephiroth and the meaning of Kairi's presence at Destiny Islands. (start spoiler) She was sent by Ansem to Destiny Islands as a child ... to watch Sora maybe? Who knows? (end spoiler)
  • New Weapons, including two new keyblades, shields, and rods. (images at bottom)
  • Four new magic abilities. (images at the bottom)
  • Plus much more that has been included for Japanese Gamers only. Don't pout, though, as we will have most of these features in Kingdom Hearts II.

Will Square-Enix ever release a version for the US & UK just as a collector's item? Maybe add some new features?

Don't hold your breath as it has been over year since Kingdom Hearts has been released, and SquareSoft has tons of titles coming and going. They are already concentrating on games like Final Fantasy X-2, Final Fantasy XI, and Final Fantasy XII not to mention the two sequels to Kingdom Hearts. As for adding new features, Square would only be digging themselves into a hole because Japanese players would then be demanding these new features eventually causing the creation of more half-assed sequels than the Tony Hawk series.

Word is that Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix has some pretty hot concept art. Is that right?

Yes, and you can click here to view the screenshots as we have many.
