NEWSWEEK Stories about Podcasting

What are podcasts?
Podcasts are online audio programs that you can listen to on your personal computer or portable devices such as the popular Apple iPod or other MP3 players. Owners of these devices can set their computers to download automatically the latest programs from any podcaster, such as NEWSWEEK. Think of these podcasts as audio magazine subscriptions or portable on-demand radio shows; they’re delivered to you, and you can listen to them at your leisure. There are thousands of podcasters on the Internet today, broadcasting personalized radio shows with music, news and commentary. Many are created by tech-savvy individuals and at-home DJs, but increasingly, big media outlets are experimenting with the format.

How can I use podcasts?
It’s possible to listen to podcasts using desktop audio players such as Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. But most users listen to podcasts on their iPods or other portable devices. This portability is part of the appeal. Podcasts can be downloaded and listened to at the user’s discretion—while commuting or shopping for groceries. If you already have podcasting software like iTunes, use the links at right to download our shows. Otherwise you’ll need to download free software (click here for directions).
