Make a request for study, editorial, or commercial use |

Black-and-white photographs may be purchased for study and/or publication. Requests for black-and-white photographs sold for study must be resubmitted for permission to publish.
Color transparencies may be borrowed for a limited time for publication only. Publication-ready digital images may be sent in lieu of transparencies when available. Professional journalists may request images to accompany media coverage of Museum exhibitions, installations, or events from the Communications Department.
All requests for the purchase or rental of photographic material must be put in writing and include the following:
- Name of requestor and/or contact name, if different
- Contact mailing address
- Contact fax and phone number
- Contact email
- Contact institutional affiliation
Image information:
- Artist
- Title
- MMA accession number
- Format: color or black-and-white
- Intended use(s) (please indicate if for study/personal use or for publication; if for publication, see below)
Publication information:
Author
Title
Publisher
Intended date of publication
Languages of publication
Distribution (i.e. North American, worldwide, etc.)

Please provide illustrations when available. The Works of Art section and the Timeline of Art History display over 10,000 works of art with accompanying information that can provide a basis for research. Requests submitted with missing or incorrect information will incur delays.

Make a request for re-use of previously licensed material |
To publish photographic materials previously obtained, or to re-use materials in another publication in any medium, please put the request in writing and include all of the required information (see above).
Please provide a copy of the previous permission agreement. The Museum issues permission for publication only from the black-and-white photographs or from color files made from the transparencies originally licensed by the Museum.

Make a request for new photography |
Requests for new photography are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Upon approval, additional fees will apply.

Fees vary based on the profit/non-profit status of the requestor, type of photographic material requested, the nature of the use, and the scope of the distribution. Requests for new photography will incur additional fees. Please contact the Image Library for information on pricing.

Upon receipt and approval of the request, an invoice and licensing agreement will be sent to the requestor for payment and signature. Payment must be made in advance and can be made using the following methods:
- Credit card (we accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express).
- A check in U.S. dollars written on a U.S. bank, which is a member of the American Banking Association (ABA). The ABA number must be printed on the check.
- Wire transfer. Please be aware that bank transfers can cause considerable delays. Following is the name and address of the Library’s bank and the account number.

Purchase slides for educational use |
Digital and analog slides of selected works of art from the Museum’s collection as well as from other museums and collections around the world may be purchased from commercial vendors for educational use only (see below). The images may not be reproduced. For permission to reproduce images of art from the Metropolitan’s collection, please refer to the information above.
